Jordan Henderson described his Ajax debut as "special" after he played 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw with PSV Eindhoven.

Ajax matched the runaway league leaders at the Johan Cruyff Arena, becoming just the second team to stop PSV winning in the Eredivisie this season.

Henderson, who was watched by England manager Gareth Southgate, was given a warm welcome by the home supporters after his January move from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq.

Speaking to ESPN, the ex-Liverpool midfielder said: "It was a very good game. The atmosphere was incredible.

"Obviously it was a special day for me and my family. To represent this football club for the first time — that was special. And to play in this stadium was really special.

"PSV have an amazing team, they've been unbeaten all season.

"But I thought we had some good chances to win the game towards the end. But unfortunately we couldn't find the back of the net."

Ajax are now unbeaten in 12 league games after a dismal start to the season.

John van't Schip's resurgent side currently sit fifth in the Eredivisie table, with qualification for the Champions League not yet out of the question.

Henderson added: "I think there's still a lot to improve on.

"But it's been a privilege and an honour to play for this club. Unfortunately we couldn't finish it in the end. But we've got a point to move on from."

Asked about Southgate's attendance, Henderson said: "Hopefully he picked a good game and he enjoyed the game."
