In a thrilling final weekend of the Premier League season, the race for the Golden Boot went down to the wire.

A captivating tussle between Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah and Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son resulted in both players ending their domestic campaign with 23 league goals.

Here, we take a look to see where the accolade was won and lost.

Egyptian king shares crown

Despite missing out on the league title, Salah can now celebrate his third Golden Boot in just five seasons at Liverpool.

He started the campaign in prolific form and netted 10 goals in his opening nine games, including a hat-trick at Manchester United.

The Reds' No11 bagged braces in the 6-0 win against Leeds and the 4-0 thumping of United on his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, before then crucially finding the net in the final moments of the 3-1 victory over Wolves on the final day.

Despite a slight downturn in form towards the end of the campaign, Salah remains bullish about his abilities: "If you compare me with any player in my position, not only in my team but in the world, you will find that I am the best.

"I always focus on my work and do my best and my numbers are the best proof of my words."

Shining Son

Son brought himself back into the conversation with a brace in Tottenham's 3-1 victory over Leicester and additional strikes against Liverpool and Arsenal.

The South Korean was one goal behind Salah before the trip to Norwich but ensured he shared the prestigious award thanks to a second-half brace at Carrow Road.

Becoming the first Asian player to secure the prize, Son said: "I’m very happy and I’m really grateful to the team, they helped me along all season but especially in this game today because after 3-0, everyone was like, 'come on Sonny, you’ve got to do it, you deserve this' and I really appreciate that."

Best of the rest

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a memorable hat-trick to secure a 3-2 victory against Tottenham

Five goals further back on 18 strikes was Cristiano Ronaldo. Recent hat-tricks against Spurs and Norwich had just about kept the Portuguese icon in the running but a blank in the 4-0 loss at Brighton ended his realistic hopes.

Son's Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane enjoyed another free-scoring campaign, netting his 17th of the season in the 5-0 win for Antonio Conte's side against the Canaries.

Liverpool have often had two players in the race for the Golden Boot in recent seasons and Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota have once again enjoyed impressive goal returns.

With a tally of 16, Mane reached double figures once again and bagged another respectable goal record this term.

Having notched a goal less than his Anfield colleague, Jota continues to look like one of the smartest Premier League buys of the past decade.

Kevin De Bruyne meanwhile catapulted himself up the scoring charts with a stunning four-goal haul at Wolves, to take him also up to the 15 mark.

Jamie Vardy also experienced a late-season renaissance with five goals in four games to end alongside De Bruyne and Jota in this esteemed list.
