Runs in the family

Sunderland caretaker boss Mike Dodds believes Jobe Bellingham can follow in his superstar brother's footsteps and go "to the very top" after his late winner against Leeds.

The 18-year-old headed home his fourth career goal to secure a 1-0 victory and spark scenes of pandemonium at the Stadium of Light, all while his older sibling was helping Real Madrid beat Union Berlin 3-2 in their final Champions League group stage match.

And while Dodds admits it is difficult for Bellingham to "get credit in the bank for himself" as a result of his brother's success, he believes the teenager is well on the way to superstardom.

He said: "I think it speaks volumes for Jobe that as an 18-year-old boy in the Championship, he could play as a No9 against West Brom on Saturday and then as a No10 against Leeds tonight.

"That shows what quality and class he has and just highlights what a fantastic talent he is regardless of the name on the back of his shirt.

"I think he can go to the very top. I've worked with a lot of young players and he would be up there with the very best I've worked with."

Kamikaze football

Rio Ferdinand slammed Manchester United's "kamikaze football" in the Champions League this season after they were eliminated from all European competition.

Bayern Munich triumphed 1-0 at Old Trafford yesterday evening, with Kingsley Coman's second-half goal condemning Erik ten Hag's side to their 12th defeat of the campaign in all competitions and a bottom-place finish in Group A.

And ex-Red Devils defender Ferdinand did not hold back with his assessment of performances in previous matches, namely the 4-3 defeat in Copenhagen and 3-3 draw at Galatasaray.

He said: "To score three goals in each of their away games and not come away with many points, it's criminal. It is kamikaze football almost.

"You get what you deserve. If you are not clinical and you can't close matches out you don't deserve to progress to the knockout phase.

"I think it's the best worst-case scenario. I would rather Man Utd go out and concentrate on the league than go into the Europa League and exert themselves more."

Best Coach nominees

Manchester City beat Inter Milan 1-0 in last season's Champions League final

FIFA have announced the nominees for the men's and women's Best Coach awards.

Pep Guardiola will be the favourite to triumph after guiding Manchester City to the Treble, while Italian duo Simone Inzaghi and Luciano Spalletti are also in the running.

For the women's award, Barcelona boss Jonatan Giraldez could be the frontrunner after leading his side to league and Champions League glory, with England boss Sarina Wiegman and Chelsea's Emma Hayes the other two nominees.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on January 15.

Illness lingering

David Moyes guided West Ham to Europa Conference League glory last season

West Ham boss David Moyes says the sickness bug that contributed to their 5-0 hammering at Fulham is still lingering in the camp ahead of tomorrow's match against Freiburg.

If the Hammers avoid defeat at the London Stadium, they will secure top spot in their group and avoid the Europa League play-off round.

Moyes said: "We've had a few people with a bit of illness. We've still got a few lingering with it in the last day or two, but we think we're OK.

"I don't think it's anything that will keep people out for weeks or anything like that, there has just been a bit of sickness and all sorts going on.

"It's just been keeping us under the weather a little bit."

Anfield rocking

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool go into this weekend top of the Premier League table

Liverpool have announced they are ready to welcome their largest crowd in 50 years for Manchester United's visit to Anfield on Sunday.

The new Anfield Road Stand upper tier is now open, which allows for over 57,000 fans to attend the crunch Premier League fixture.

It will be the largest crowd at the iconic stadium since 1973, when 56,202 supporters watched Bill Shankly's side draw 0-0 with Leicester in the First Division.

Vice-president of stadium operations Paul Cuttill said: "This is fantastic news and testament to the sheer hard work and commitment that all involved in this complex project have put in.

"We were forced to revise on construction schedules after Buckingham went into administration in September and thought we wouldn't be able to open the upper tier until January.

"So to find ourselves ahead of that schedule is great, a real credit to all involved. The priority has always been to get fans into the upper tier safely and as soon as possible."

Making history

Real Sociedad are currently sixth in the LaLiga table

Real Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil heaped praise on his team's achievement after they finished top of their Champions League group.

The LaLiga outfit held last season's finalists Inter Milan to a 0-0 draw at the San Siro on Matchday 6 and Alguacil thinks it will take a considerable amount of time before the scale of the success is recognised.

He said: "I don't think we are aware of what we are doing, of what this team achieves.

"It will probably take us years to realise what this group is doing.

"Making history in a stadium like this and against a hell of rival like Inter, getting into the next round and first in the group. It's incredible."
