Tick tock

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says that a stopwatch may be required to sort out time-wasting in football once and for all.

Takehiro Tomiyasu's first of two yellow cards against Crystal Palace on Monday night was awarded after referee David Coote declared he had taken too long over a throw-in, something Arteta took issue with.

Upon being told that Tomiyasu had taken 23 seconds to restart play, the Basque boss said: "It wasn't. I think it was eight seconds. We might have to play with a stopwatch.

"The referee makes that call. The only thing we are asking for is consistency.

"If not, we need to play with a stopwatch to understand what is it and what is not."

Roy Hodgson says Crystal Palace deserved more against Arsenal

Roy Hodgson believes his Crystal Palace side deserved a point from Monday night's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.

The Gunners were reduced to 10 men when Takehiru Tomiyasu was sent off in the second half but Palace failed to take advantage, despite an onslaught on their opponents' goal.

Hodgson said: "When they went down to 10 men we gave it our best shot but they are a top-quality team and they were able to defend the efforts we had.

"They got a lot of bodies around the goalkeeper so we couldn’t get through the cordon but that is often the case.

"There were very few disappointments in the game for me in terms of the Crystal Palace performance. On another day I think we would be feeling even happier and proud of ourselves."

Henry in the hot seat

Thierry Henry is the new France Under-21s manager

Thierry Henry has been appointed as France Under-21s manager on a two-year contract.

The French legend, who scored 51 goals in 123 appearances for the senior national team, will lead the side as they aim to qualify for the 2025 European Under-21 Championship.

Henry will also coach his country at next year's Olympic Games.

His previous coaching jobs have seen him manage Monaco and Montreal Impact as well as forming part of Belgium's backroom staff.

The winger, signed from Chelsea last month, crashed a 20-yard strike into the corner after being teed up by former Blues team-mate Olivier Giroud.

A third signing from Stamford Bridge, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, also made his debut for Stefano Pioli's side.

Giroud scored Milan's other goal as they got their Serie A campaign off to a winning start.

Hannes where the heart is

Burnlyey have signed Hannes Delcroix from Anderlecht

Burnley have signed centre-back Hannes Delcroix on a three-year deal from Anderlecht.

The defender arrives on an undisclosed fee after making 65 appearances for the Belgian club.

He said: "It's a great team. It was not difficult to come here when I got the option.

"It's a different competition, the Premier League. Everybody knows it. It's the best competition in the world at the moment. I am happy to be here."

Two different balls have been produced for the men's and women's tournaments but both have been designed to celebrate the pre-match music that has become so synonymous with the continental competition.

A UEFA statement said: "The men’s iteration of the official match ball integrates a single letter from the instantly recognisable chorus lyric — 'THE CHAMPIONS' — on to each of the 12 stars.

"The introduction of a bespoke anthem for the Women’s Champions League in the 2021-22 season marked the start of a new dawn for the tournament.

"In honour of that moment, the new design incorporates the lyrics of the song in two of the ball’s eye-catching star panels."
