Hayes hopes England win is just the start

Emma Hayes hopes England's victory at Women's Euro 2022 leads to success off the field.

The Lionesses were roared on by a record crowd at Wembley after their incredible run gripped the country.

And Hayes, the boss of dominant Women's Super League outfit Chelsea, hopes that the tournament's legacy will be to see women given more equal access to sport and fair pay.

Asked what she hoped would come out of England's victory, she told LiveScore: "In five years’ time, I look back and I say that Wembley wasn't a one-off and that access to sport across the country is equal.

"And the investment in our game is something we're not even having a conversation about. And the women involved in the game are renumerated fairly for what they do."

England will be among the favourites when the World Cup kicks off next summer but Hayes believes Sarina Wiegman's squad should be allowed to enjoy their triumph before planning their campaign.

Speaking on behalf of McDonald’s Fun Football, she added: "It's about celebrating what happened and doing that for the next month and I'm sure come September, Sarina will prepare for that challenge.

"And of course as European champions, they're going to be considered favourites but it's a different tournament, different time, different expectations."

Goalkeeper Mary Earps, captain Leah Williamson, midfielder Keira Walsh and striker Beth Mead have all been recognised for their incredible performances on home soil.

Runners-up Germany have five players in the star-studded line-up — Lena Oberdorf, Alexandra Popp, Giulia Gwinn, Marina Hegering and Klara Buhl.

France defender Sakina Karchaoui and Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati are also in the mix.

The Lionesses take on Austria and Luxembourg in qualifiers for next summer's World Cup in September and have lined up a glamour friendly against the USA at Wembley on October 7.

Jota's pride at new deal

Diogo Jota admitted his pride after committing his future to Liverpool with a long-term contract extension.

The Portuguese international, 25, has been a key figure for Jurgen Klopp's Reds since arriving from Wolves in 2020.

And he thanked the club for putting their faith in him after signing his new contract.

Jota, who will miss the start of the season with a hamstring injury, said: "Well, [I’m] really proud, I have to say.

"Obviously since I arrived two years ago I established myself as an important player in this team — that’s what I wanted from the beginning.

"Now, signing a new long-term deal, it’s obviously from the club’s perspective proof of the belief in myself as a player. For me, it’s really good to establish I’ll be here for a while.

Rodgers reveals Foxes' finance issues

Brendan Rodgers has revealed that a change in Leicester's financial position has prompted their lack of transfer business this summer.

The Foxes are the only Premier League side yet to make a signing since the end of last season.

And the Northern Irish coach, who guided Leicester to an eighth-place finish in 2021-22, conceded that they may struggle to punch above their weight this term.

Rodgers, 49, said: "I became aware towards the end of the season that the club would have to balance its books, then of course that becomes very difficult.

"This club will not look to spend money they don't have and that is where the club is stable and they will always be very sensible.

"This is a fantastic club, the owners are amazing with where we have been and trying to fight against the so-called elite clubs.

"I have at least been able to be competitive and challenge those. Unfortunately for us this year, it's going to be difficult to put that in place.

"It may change over the course of the rest of the window, but once I found that [the club's financial situation] out, I had to go back in and focus on what we have, rather than what we don't have."

But that may prove difficult with interest in Youri Tielemans, Wesley Fofana and James Maddison rife, as well as skipper Kasper Schmeichel who is likely to join Nice in the coming days.

Ex-England boss seeing impact already

Ex-England boss Hope Powell has revealed Brighton are already seeing mass interest after the Lionesses' victory

The impact of England's Women’s Euro 2022 victory over Germany is already being felt at some Women’s Super League clubs.

Brighton boss Hope Powell, who was in charge of the Lionesses for 15 years between 1998 and 2013, revealed her club have already seen a huge upturn in interest.

Powell, 55, said: "This gives us a fantastic platform to launch even further than where we are now.

"Today at Brighton, I was told season ticket sales have gone up by 222%.

"So the impact it's already had on the domestic league is there and visible. The challenge going forward is that it has to be sustainable over a period of time.

"The domestic game in terms of attendances is hit and miss for some clubs.

"I am hoping that as a result of all of this euphoria and the fact that everyone has witnessed some fantastic displays of football, from all the nations involved, that fans and people who are interested in the game look at the product and go 'this is worth going to watch'."

Corberan finds new work

Carlos Corberan has been named the new Olympiacos boss after quitting Huddersfield last month

Ex-Huddersfield boss Carlos Corberan has been named Olympiacos’ new manager less than a month after quitting the Terriers.

Corberan, 39, guided the West Yorkshire outfit to the Championship play-off final last term, where they lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.

But he dramatically quit his role just three weeks before the new season despite that success.

Though it was an amicable parting, Corberan cited that the club’s vision for the future did not match his.

Now Marcelo Bielsa’s former assistant boss has moved to the Greek champions to replace Pedro Martins, who was sacked following elimination from the Champions League second qualifying round by Maccabi Haifa.
