Feyenoord will go in search of their third Champions League win in a row when they host struggling Red Bull Salzburg at Stadion Feyenoord on Wednesday.

After losing 4-0 at home to Bayer Leverkusen in their opener, the Dutch club have been buoyed by a pair of away wins against Girona and Benfica.

Salzburg are among the six teams still to pick up their first point in this year’s League Phase after losing all three of their games without scoring against Sparta Prague, Brest and Dinamo Zagreb.

The pressure is on former Liverpool assistant boss Pepijn Lijnders to turn things around at a club unused to such a dismal run of results.

Team news

Janis Blaswich will be back between the sticks for Salzburg

Gernot Trauner is likely to be in Salzburg's starting XI, after being rested at the weekend.

Jordan Lotomba has been out since suffering a hamstring injury against Benfica on matchday three while Ayase Ueda went off before half-time against Ajax with a similar problem and sat out Saturday's win.

Santiago Gimenez has been missing for the past six weeks with a thigh injury while Calvin Stengs is not ready to return from the knee surgery he underwent at the end of August.

As for Salzburg, goalkeeper Alexander Schlager was sent off in the second half of the 2-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the last European outing and he will be replaced by Janis Blaswich.

Amar Dedic, Maurits Kjærgaard and Lucas Gourna-Douath could miss out again due to injury, while Stefan Bajcetic and Mads Bidstrup are doubts after a gastrointestinal infection prevented both midfielders from training on Monday.

The stats

Feyenoord have lost just twice in their 15 contests this term (W8 D5).

Publicidad

De club aan de Maas have won three of the last four home matches, beating NAC Breda, Twente and AZ.

Salzburg have failed to score in seven of their last 11 games in all competitions, but they have won all four games in which they did find the net.

The Red Bulls have won just one of their last six away assignments, a 4-0 cup success over Wiener Viktoria.

Prediction

After coming through two rounds of qualifying to reach the League Phase, Salzburg fans must be wondering if it was all worth it.

The Red Bulls have been outclassed in all three of their games so far, failing to score in any of them and conceding a grand total of nine goals.

Even their usually excellent domestic form has looked decidedly iffy with recent back-to-back 0-0 draws against Wolfsberger AC and Grazer AK underlining their lack of a cutting edge up front.

Feyenoord are having no such problems scoring goals, but they were made to pay for tactical naivete by Ajax recently.

The Dutch side did the business in home wins against Celtic and Lazio under Arne Slot last season and although this current crop may not be quite as dominant, they are more penetrative than Salzburg right now.

With Salzburg potentially missing a few key players in midfield, it seems well worth backing Feyenoord to cover a one-goal handicap.
