Starman to swerve British Champions Sprint

Trainer Ed Walker says Starman is "highly unlikely" to run in the British Champions Sprint at Ascot and will instead go for the Sprint Cup at Haydock.

The David Ward-owned four-year-old ran brilliantly in the July Cup at Newmarket to win the Group One sprint, ahead of the well-backed Dragon Symbol.

The son of Dutch Art then followed that up with a run in the Maurice de Gheest at Deauville and finished a creditable third behind eventual winner Marianafoot.

Now, Walker has been talking about future plans for Starman with Haydock top of the to-do list.

The trainer said: "He heads for the Sprint Cup next as long as the ground is the faster side of good.

"He ran well in the Maurice de Gheest, but the drying ground slightly found him out. Once he's back on fast ground he'll be great.

"It's highly unlikely he'll be in the Champions Sprint due to the ground, but he's a massively exciting horse and has already achieved so much."

Tabdeed to drop back a class

Tabdeed will drop back to Listed class this weekend as trainer Owen Burrows tries to get him back on the winning trail.

The six-year-old won the Group Three Hackwood Stakes at Newbury last July but then disappointed in his step up to Group One level, finishing well down the order in the Sprint Cup.

Two more disappointing results have followed in the last three and now Burrow has decided to drop him in class as he prepares to race in the Hopefuls Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

He said: "Tabdeed ran very well when trying to defend his Hackwood Stakes crown and he was only beaten in a photo.

"There are not many options for horses like this. There was either this or the Garrowby at York, but when we saw the entries we thought we would look at this."

Options aplenty for The Revenant

The Revenant has plenty of races to consider

The Revenant could bid to win a record third Prix Daniel Wildenstein crown, while a Queen Elizabeth II Stakes title defence is also under consideration.

Trainer Francis-Henri Gifford had entered the chestnut in the Group Three Prix Quincey at Deauville on Sunday but has withdrawn the six-year-old owing to unsuitable conditions.

Instead, Gifford is aiming for another run in the Group Two race before attempting to hold onto his Group One success from last year.

"He won't be running over the weekend because the ground is not soft enough for him," he said.

"We will probably come back and run on Arc weekend (in the Prix Daniel Wildenstein) like last year - the softer the better so we'll keep our fingers crossed."

On the prospect of defending his Queen Elizabeth title, he added: "We will see how he is when he comes back from the Prix Wildenstein and then we will decide."

Silk Romance talked up for 1000 Guineas

Silk Romance has been added to the markets for the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket following an impressive win in a novice race on the same course.

Charlie Appleby's young filly was in fantastic form on Friday, winning by five-and-a-half lengths ahead of Stellar Queen in what was just her second race.

She finished second on debut at Kempton earlier this month and is already being earmarked for a big future.

The 1000 Guineas could be a possibility but Appleby reckons she might have to take smaller steps before going to Group One Classic level.

Appleby said: "I was pleased with the performance there and she has naturally come forward for that first run at Kempton.

"I think something like the Rockfel (September 24, back at Newmarket) will be a potential target for her.

"Talking to William he was very pleased with the performance and he felt she is ready to step up to black-type company."
