- Canada had 16 efforts at goal in their opener
- Ireland have failed to score in five of their last six
- Recommended bet: Canada to win to zero

The opening round of Group B fixtures at the Women's World Cup were cagey, with just one goal between them, and it could be another tight contest when Canada face the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday.

The Canucks were the better side but failed to take their chances in their 0-0 draw against Nigeria, with Christine Sinclair seeing a penalty saved by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

It was a spot-kick that cost the Republic in their first game, with Stephanie-Elise Catley's effort making the difference in a 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Australia.

The Irish played well, causing the Matildas plenty of issues. However, they lack proven attacking quality and that could cost them in Perth.

Team news

Canada could welcome back Chelsea's Jessie Fleming after the midfielder missed her team's opener with a calf problem.

Fleming may come into midfield, but there are unlikely to be wholesale changes from Bev Priestman, with OL Reign's Jordyn Huitema expected to continue in attack alongside Portland Thorns' Sinclair.

Preistman's opposite number Vera Pauw may also limit the alterations to her line-up, with Arsenal's Katie McCabe again set to skipper the side from left wing-back.

The stats

The world rankings hint at a gulf between the sides, with Canada seventh in the standings, 15 places better off the Republic, who are 22nd.

Publicidad

Canada's best showing at a World Cup came in 2003 when they finished fourth in the USA. They made the last eight as hosts in 2015 and the round of 16 four years ago in France.

In contrast, this is the Republic's first major tournament appearance, having never previously played at a World Cup or European Championship.

Their lack of strike power was exposed as they were shut out by Australia and they have now failed to score in five of their last six outings.

The Canucks have also been left frustrated in the final third, with their inability to net against Nigeria marking the second time in three games that they have failed to beat the opposition goalkeeper, despite having 16 efforts at goal.

If Sinclair scores, she will become the first male or female player to do so at six World Cups.

There was a penalty in both sides opening games and that could be something to look for in a match where goals could be at a premium.

Christine Sinclair will want to make amends for a penalty miss against Nigeria

Prediction

This has the hallmarks of another tight game but it may prove to be heartache for the Republic against a talented Canadian side who were underwhelming against Nigeria.

The Canucks should really have got the job done and will be out to make amends, with Sinclair especially having a point to prove.

Pauw's team were resourceful against the Matildas, but their lack of goals is a worry and could again prove their downfall.

Canada have the squad to at least match their round of 16 outing of four years ago in France and Priestman will be demanding better from her team.

Publicidad

The North Americans may again encounter long spells of frustration but should have enough to get the result against a dogged Ireland side, but one lacking proven quality in attack.
