Premier League Luton were frustrated by League One Bolton in their FA Cup third-round tie at Kenilworth Road and another close contest is anticipated when the teams meet again on Tuesday.

The Hatters are battling against relegation from the top-flight and have done better than some expected by winning four of their first 20 games to sit only one point away from the safety line.

The Trotters are having a strong campaign as they bid to get back to the Championship after five seasons, with Bolton now just two points behind leaders Portsmouth with three games in hand.

Both teams have more important battles to fight in the league, but neither will want to abandon their hopes of a run in this competition, with a trip to Everton or Crystal Palace awaiting the winners.

Team news

Bolton are without two players due to international commitments, as defender Gethin Jones is away with Australia at the Asian Cup and Carlos Mendes Gomes is part of the Guinea-Bissau squad at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Manager Ian Evatt has been happy to rotate his squad with Wanderers still fighting in League One, the FA Cup and the EFL Trophy, while midfielder Randell Williams missed the Cheltenham game due to injury and seems unlikely to feature.

Luton forward Jacob Brown should be available after missing the first game against Bolton with a knee issue and being suspended for the Premier League clash with Burnley.

Tom Lockyer and Marvelous Nakamba are out, while defender Issa Kabore is with Burkina Faso at the Africa Cup of Nations. Carlton Morris returned from injury to make a substitute appearance at Burnley and is in contention to start.

The stats

Bolton have won eight of their last nine home matches in all competitions, while there have been three or more goals scored in nine of Bolton's last 12 home games.

Publicidad

Bolton have conceded only one goal in their last five games.

Luton went out of the Carabao Cup to a League One team, losing 1-0 to Exeter.

Bolton are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with Luton, stretching back to 1993.

Prediction

Bolton can give another demonstration of why they are up to the challenge of playing at a higher level by taking Premier League Luton the distance in their FA Cup replay.

Town are the favourites to win at the second attempt after failing to make a breakthrough at Kenilworth Road, but Bolton made an impressive start to that game and should make another bold bid in front of their own fans.

Bolton have won eight of their last nine home games and they were reduced to 10 men after just 33 minutes of the game that they lost against Bristol Rovers.

Luton have been operating against the top teams in the country this season, but they have not found much success on the road, scoring only 11 goals in 10 league away games, although they have picked up wins at Everton and Sheffield United.

They avoided defeat at Burnley on Friday thanks to a highly controversial late equaliser from Carlton Morris and could be in for another close contest at Bolton.
