Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hailed "tremendous" Kai Havertz after the German's late winner against Brentford took the Gunners to the top of the Premier League.

Havertz, 24, came off the bench to head home a dramatic 89th-minute winner in West London — which was his first for the club from open play.

After a difficult start since his £60million summer move from Chelsea, Arteta was delighted to see the forward kick-start his Gunners career.

The Arsenal manager, 41, told the BBC: "I do not know anybody who is not happy for him. He fully deserves it.

"He is a tremendous football player. He was the right player and won the game for us."

Arteta's men struggled to fully click against a typically-disciplined home display by the Bees but will end the weekend at the top of the Premier League for the first time since May.

On his side's display, he added"So happy with the way we competed, the way we played and kept going.

"I think we deserved to win the game. Compliments to their players as it is a hard place to come.

"So happy with the performance of the team and we kept the clean sheet.

"We are in good position at the top of the league. We can enjoy tonight and then we have the Champions League."

Kai Havertz headed in Bukayo Saka's cross to win the game for Arsenal

A deflated Thomas Frank felt the Bees deserved to take a point from the game after suffering just their second home defeat of the campaign in the dying embers.

The Danish manager told TNT Sports: "That’s the tough one in this beautiful game that we lose a game where get so many things right. I think it's a game that should have been a draw.

"We managed to keep them very quiet throughout the game, then Saka has one fantastic moment, a fantastic cross that decides the game.

"Either team could have won, it could easily have been us.

"This was another good performance from us, we need to keep building on it but it is tough to lose in the last moments of a game we could easily have won."
