AC Milan to win & both teams to score

Serie A heavyweights AC Milan and Roma clash on Thursday at the San Siro in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.

The Rossoneri are the form team as they come into the clash seeking to extend a seven-game winning run, although Roma have improved of late and they head into the fixture after a morale-boosting Derby della Capitale win over Lazio.

Team news

Milan will be without defender Fikayo Tomori as he is suspended, but fellow Englishman Ruben Loftus-Cheek returns from a ban of his own after he missed the win over Lecce at the weekend.

The hosts have no fresh injury worries and back-up keeper Antonio Mirante could return to the bench after a stint on the sidelines.

Evan Ndicka won’t be involved for Roma due to suspension and Iranian forward Sardar Azmoun is a doubt due to injury.

The stats

AC Milan are unbeaten in nine against Roma (W6, D3) in a run stretching back to 2019.

Roma have scored in each of their last eight games against the Rossoneri.

Publicidad

Milan have won 10 of their last 14 home games and have conceded six goals across their five home European games this season.

Daniele De Rossi has made a positive start to his time in charge of Roma.

Prediction

Two of Italy’s big guns face off in European competition on Thursday in the first leg of their Europa League last eight tie, and AC Milan go into the game as strong favourites.

The Rossoneri won 3-1 when these sides last met at this venue in January, having prevailed 2-1 in Rome earlier in the season.

Roma have hit a bit of form of late with six wins and just one defeat across their last 10 games in all competitions but it is hard to envisage anything other than a Rossoneri victory here.

Milan have dominated the recent meetings between these sides with six wins and three draws in the last nine meetings, while they have not lost a home game against Roma since 2017 – winning four of the six games these pair have contested at the San Siro since.

The hosts are also the form team as they have won seven consecutive games across all competitions.

As such, a Milan win is expected but Roma can keep this tie alive by at least getting on the scoresheet. They may be winless in nine against their hosts, but they have scored in the last eight of those games and Milan have gone three games without a clean sheet in this competition.

Roma have also scored in six of their last eight away fixtures, so they can at least grab a goal in defeat at the San Siro.
