Liverpool get their Champions League campaign underway on Tuesday night and a tricky test is in store for Arne Slot’s men when they travel to the San Siro to face AC Milan.

The Reds have a tough-looking fixture list in this year’s competition — facing the likes of reigning champions Real Madrid and Bundesliga winners Bayer Leverkusen in their opening eight matches — but they could get some joy against a Milan side who have only won one match in all competitions so far this season.

Team news

AC Milan will be without Alessandro Florenzi (ACL), Marco Sportiello (hand) and Ismael Bennacer (ankle), while the fitness of both Davide Calabria and Malick Thiaw will need to be assessed.

Publicidad

Theo Hernandez, Youssouf Fofana, Christian Pulisic and Tammy Abraham all got on the scoresheet at the weekend and all could feature for the Rossoneri on Tuesday.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot will likely have close to a fully-fit squad to choose from for Tuesday’s match, although Harvey Elliott is unavailable due to a fractured foot.

New signing Federico Chiesa is still returning to fitness and is not expected to make his debut in his homeland, so Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah are expected to keep their places on the flanks for the Reds.

The stats

Paulo Fonseca's Milan have made a sluggish start but did register their first win of the campaign on Saturday

Liverpool have won eight of their last 10 Champions League away matches.

Publicidad

The Reds have conceded just one goal so far this season, coming in a surprise 1-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

Milan have not lost any of their last five matches at the San Siro in all competitions

Each of Milan’s four matches this season has seen at least one side score twice.

Liverpool won 2-1 on their last trip to AC Milan.

The Rossoneri last defeated Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League final, with Filippo Inzaghi scoring twice in a 2-1 victory.

Prediction

Liverpool require a response after their disappointing performance at home to Forest on Saturday and the Reds should be confident in coming away from the San Siro with all three points on Tuesday.

The Reds have been a force to be reckoned with in Europe in recent seasons, winning 15 of their last 21 matches in this competition, and only tasting defeats against the likes of perennial winners Real Madrid (twice), Napoli and Inter Milan — both of whom were either reigning Serie A champions or went on to lift the Scudetto.

While they have the quality for victory, the three points are unlikely to come simply for Liverpool. Three of AC Milan’s last four matches have seen both sides find the back of the net and the last two Champions League meetings between these two sides have seen goals at both ends.

Milan can trouble the Red’s backline and should get on the scoresheet but the visitors are still expected to come away with victory.
