A great strike in the first half from the Netherlands and a perfect set play from the US set up a thrilling 1-1 draw in the 2019 World Cup final rematch in Wellington, New Zealand.

The defending champions were explosive in the early stages as the Dutch struggled to get the ball up field through the United States’ press.

But the Dutch tempered the fire and opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Manchester City midfielder Jill Roord.

Some fantastic build up play and a failed clearance in the box pushed the ball to Arsenal midfielder Victoria Pelova, who dished it back to the edge of the box for Roord to drive a grounded shot into the right-hand corner.

Drama preluded the United States’ equaliser with Lyon club teammates Lindsey Horan and Danielle Van de Donk spoken to by the referee as they jostled while the corner was placed.

A beautiful corner from Rose Lavelle found a running Horan who headed it home in the 62nd minute.

The score lit a fire under the US, who had a later goal waved away after a narrow offside.
