Overview of Cheltenham Day 4
Cheltenham Day 4 - Gold Cup Day: All You Need To Know
Date: Friday 14th March, 2025
Gates: 10:30
First race: 13:20
Gold Cup Race: 16:00
Final Race: 17:20
Gold Cup Day at Cheltenham is the grand finale, marking the end of four days of relentless racing action. It is seen as a day when legends are made. Feel the suspense as the Gold Cup race edges ever closer and the Prestbury Cup is awarded to Britain or Ireland.
With the stakes so high, the crowd's roar is louder than ever and intense like no other day. The event includes seven blockbuster races, including the JCB Triumph Hurdle, the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, and the pinnacle of jumps racing, the Gold Cup.
Tips for the Day 4 Feature Race
The JCB Triumph Hurdle (Grade 1)
The opening race of the final day sees some potential future Gold Cup contenders in action. It officially kickstarts Cheltenham Day 4 and is another opportunity for Britain and Ireland to try and get another winner on the board in a bid for the Prestbury Cup.
It has been dominated since 2020 by Willie Mullins, except in 2021 when Henry De Bromhead sneaked his way in to interrupt an otherwise Mullins Triumph Hurdle. It is one the Irish trainers go after after successfully keeping any British-trained horses out of the winning spot since 2019.
The Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle Race (Grade 1)
The one before the big one, this Novices’ Hurdle race, has been known to be a stepping stone for future stars of the Stayers’ Hurdle and the Gold Cup. It saw the 2018-2020 Stayers Hurdle champions involved, as well as two Gold Cup winners, Bobs Wort and Minello Indo.
It is yet another race where the winners tend to be products of Irish trainers, including 8 of the last 11 champions. Since 2017, it has been no longer than 2 years apart without a Willie Mullins win, with Gordon Elliot, Gavin Cromwell, and Henry De Bromhead all getting winners in between.
The Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Steeple Chase (Grade 1)
The main event of the entire festival, who will be crowned the 2025 Cheltenham Gold Cup champion? It’s safe to say this year, all eyes will be on W.P. Mullins and Galopin Des Champs, who is, as it stands, going after a third successive victory in the event having been entered!
The last time we saw a 3-time champion was in 2004 when Best Mate secured three wins from three! Since then, it has been two wins from two twice for Mullins. British racegoers had not seen a winner since 2018 when Colin Tizzard and Native River crossed the line first.
Cheltenham Festival Day 4 Trends and Highlights
Need some inspiration or some Cheltenham Day 4 tips to guide your betting for the final day? Check out below to explore some possible trends and highlights from previous festivals.
The obvious one for Day 4 is the dominance of the Irish trainers. Every race on the final day in 2024 saw at least one Irish-trained horse finish in the places. This also included a 1 and 2 in the Gold Cup and just one of the seven races where Ireland did not finish first. This was the Open Hunters Chase, which we predict will be the focus to secure a clean sweep of firsts this time.
Another tradition on Day 4 is the awarding of the Presbury Cup. Since its introduction in 2014, it has been won by both Britain and Ireland. In 2019, it was a tie. However, since then, there has been a bit of consistency associated with the winner, with Ireland taking home the trophy ever since. Great Britain’s last victory was back in 2015. Could they regain their trophy back ten years later?
Tips for Betting on Cheltenham Day 4
Research Top Irish Trainers
With such a variety of Irish winners and place finishers, the first of our Cheltenham Friday tips is to do some research on top Irish trainers. This can include Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott, Gavin Cromwell, Henry De Bromhead, and any others you think could impact the day. In 2024, the Irish trainers saw 13 total place finishers at Cheltenham Day 4, with five winners. Ireland also secured the Presbury Cup with 18 winners to Great Britain’s 9.
Explore Horse Racing Specific Bet Types
Another of our Cheltenham Day 4 tips is to look at various betting types, including horse racing specific ones, to help make the most out of your bets. This includes exploring the likes of Non-Runner No Bets, Faller Insurance, Each-Way and Extra Place bets. Placing bets specific to races can boost your chances of winning as they are designed for specific incidents to happen, therefore covering them.
Always Gamble Responsibly
Like any betting site on any other sport, horse racing betting is no different regarding ensuring you bet responsibly. Ensure you set a budget for yourself and track the time you spend on a platform. Avoid things like chasing losses and betting more than you can afford. Utilise responsible gambling features available on platforms to help control your betting, too, such as setting deposit and time limits for your account to keep better track and control your habits.
