Romelu Lukaku is said to want to leave Chelsea and return to Inter Milan this summer

Romelu Lukaku has set his sights on a return to Inter Milan — if the cash-strapped Serie A runners-up can afford him.

According to Sky Sports, Inter will struggle to meet Chelsea's asking price to re-sign Lukaku on a permanent basis.

That would leave the Blues facing the prospect of having to accept a cut-price offer or agree a loan deal.

But it remains to be seen whether the club's new owners would take a hit on a player who cost £97.5million from the Nerazzurri last summer.

Lukaku's lawyer will meet Inter officials on Tuesday in the hope of getting the ball rolling on an arrangement that suits all parties.

But while the Italian giants are keen to take the 29-year-old hitman back to the San Siro, he may be left with no choice but to knuckle down and hope for a better season with the Blues.

Despite finishing 2021-22 as Chelsea's top scorer with 15 goals, Lukaku was a shadow of his former self and was dropped before the 2-2 draw with Liverpool in January following the release of a controversial interview.

Broadcast just before the Premier League showdown, comments recorded several weeks prior to the fixture made it clear he wanted to move back to Italy.
