Sheffield United have made a solid, unspectacular start to the Championship season and they will be aiming to make a statement by targeting a victory over in-form Watford at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

The Blades are aiming for an immediate return to the Premier League but have followed an encouraging 2-0 victory away to Preston with less satisfactory draws at home to QPR (2-2) and away to Norwich (1-1).

Chris Wilder’s side bowed out of the EFL Cup on Tuesday with a 1-0 loss at League One Barnsley and face a tough test against the Hornets, who have reeled off five straight wins in all competitions.

Watford are striving to start a campaign with four successive league wins for the first time since the 2018-19 season when they were the early Premier League pace-setters.

Team news

Femi Seriki and Jamie Shackleton are unavailable for the Blades.

Watford are without midfielder Imran Louza and defender Kevin Keben but could involve forward Daniel Jebbison, who has signed on loan from Bournemouth.

The stats

Sheffield United are unbeaten in their last three league games.

Five of the Blades’ last six matches with Watford have featured less than three goals.

Two of the last four matches between the teams have seen the points shared.

Watford have won their last five matches.

The Hornets have lost just two of their last 12 Championship away games.

Watford have scored in each of their last seven fixtures.

Prediction

Watford have been one of the success stories in the early part of the Championship season and they can underline their improvement since last term by earning a point against Sheffield United in South Yorkshire.

There is no doubt that the Hornets’ trip to Bramall Lane presents them with a step up in class but they have been taking everything in their stride under rookie manager Tom Cleverley, who has got his players playing a high intensity, positive brand of football.

The Hornets fell below expectations last season and frequently struggled to score goals, but they have netted 15 times in five matches this term and are playing with a lot of confidence.

Sheffield United will offer Cleverley’s charges a stern test as they seek to maintain their unbeaten start.

But the Blades are already four points adrift of Watford in the second tier standings and that gap may remain intact by Sunday night.
