Scott McTominay has admitted the atmosphere became toxic under recent managers at Manchester United but insists history is not repeating itself under Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman is under pressure with United having lost five of their last 10 matches in all competitions — including a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday — and games against Bayern Munich and Liverpool this week could be decisive for his future.

But McTominay — who has also played under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford — believes the atmosphere at the club has improved.

He said: "It is not the case like with some of the other managers where it has been a little bit toxic at times.

"The boys are firmly behind the manager and that is the be all and end all. I have said in many other interviews that it's the way it will remain.

"We have got amazing coaching staff as well. It is the players' responsibility first and foremost, the players know that as well."

The Scottish midfielder accepts United have blown hot and cold this season, with victories against Everton and Chelsea in recent weeks offset by worrying defeats.

But he is determined to repay the faith Ten Hag has shown in him by getting the team's form back on track.

He added: "We are inconsistent as a team, we have not been naive to that.

"The schedule has been relentless but we can't use that as an excuse. As a group we have to come together and find out the answers to that.

"Faith in me from the manager has been massive and you want to repay that as much as you can.

"In the life of a footballer you will always have ups and downs — it is not always sunshine and rainbows. I have had an opportunity and want to do what I can to support the team."

United must beat Bayern on Tuesday and hope FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray draw in order to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Red Devils will not even qualify for the Europa League if they lose to the Bundesliga giants.
