- Real Madrid have lost only one of their last 10 Champions League matches, winning eight
- Real Madrid have scored 69 times in their last 30 UCL home knockout games, averaging 2.3 goals per game
- Recommended bet: Real Madrid win and over 1.5 goals

Real Madrid and Chelsea face off in a repeat of last year's Champions League quarter-final — only this time the first leg will be played at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spanish champions ended the Blues' reign as the kings of Europe with a 5-4 aggregate success after extra-time 12 months ago.

Both clubs are going through difficult periods domestically with Real 13 points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona and Chelsea now under the charge of their third manager this term due to months of inconsistency.

Frank Lampard got off to an inauspicious start back as interim boss when his team lost 1-0 at Wolves on Saturday while Carlo Ancelotti's men will want to bounce back from a 3-2 home defeat inflicted by Villarreal that same day.

Team news

Ferland Mendy (calf) is the only Real Madrid player definitely ruled out through injury with David Alaba and Eden Hazard both returning from issues recently.

Ancelotti rested plenty of his regular starters against Villarreal on Saturday with Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Eder Militao and Eduardo Camavinga all likely to be recalled to the Italian's line-up.

As for Chelsea, Mason Mount is available after suspension, but an injury issue means the Englishman is a doubt anyway.

Armando Broja (ACL), Thiago Silva (knee) and Cesar Azpilicueta (head) are all out while the likes of Benoit Badiashile, Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng, Noni Madueke and David Datro Fofana were not registered for the latter stages of the competition.

N'Golo Kante, who made his first start since August against Liverpool last week, was not included in Lampard's squad at Molineux.

There have been no reports of any injury setback, so he was probably being rested ahead of this crucial clash.

The Frenchman could replace Conor Gallagher in midfield with Ben Chilwell also likely to come in for Marc Cucurella at left-back.

The stats

Real Madrid's record in two-legged knockout ties against English clubs is 12 wins and six losses with their last-16 progression against Liverpool making it seven aggregate victories in the last nine.

Meanwhile, the Blues have only lost one of their seven games against Real in European competition.

That is the lowest percentage of losses against Los Blancos (14%) of any side to have played them at least five times in Europe.

But Chelsea have now gone 323 minutes without a goal in the Premier League.

And Joao Felix, who is likely to lead the line in Madrid, has failed to score in six previous meetings with Real during a combined total of 363 minutes of action.

Prediction

Real Madrid are a vastly experienced side that know when to raise their game to meet a significant challenge, as they did in both legs of their last-16 tie against Liverpool.

Ancelotti's men usually go up a level in the latter stages of the Champions League, while their recent 4-0 win over Barca in the Copa del Rey was also a big statement.

If they can repeat a performance like that on Wednesday night, then Chelsea are going to be in big trouble.

The Blues' star-studded squad lacks cohesion and confidence and last weekend's trip to Molineux was a chance to sort out their issues before this bigger test.

But instead of rebuilding morale ahead of the impending Bernabeu battle, Lampard's team lost again and looked desperately in need of fresh ideas up front.
