Peter Bosz's PSV have been hot in front of goal recently

- PSV have scored at least two goals in 10 of their last 11 home games and six of their last eight overall
- Last month Girona were beaten 3-2 at home by Feyenoord, who sit eight points behind PSV in the Eredivisie
- Recommended Bet:
Back PSV to score two or more goals

PSV Eindhoven host Girona at the Philips Stadion on Tuesday evening with an opportunity to leapfrog their Spanish opponents in the Champions League standings.

Both teams have had difficult starts in the competition with PSV drawing against Sporting Lisbon and Paris Saint-Germain after their opening defeat at Juventus.

Girona secured their first win in this competition when they beat Slovan Bratislava at home last month, but earlier defeats to PSG and Feyenoord mean they are precariously placed in 24th spot in the league-phase table.

The two teams experienced contrasting results in domestic competition last weekend when Eredivisie leaders PSV were beaten 3-2 away by Ajax while Girona moved up to 10th in La Liga after a 4-3 home win over Leganes.

Team news

PSV coach Peter Bosz was unable to call on five players against Ajax because of injury and none of the quintet are likely to be available for Tuesday’s game either.

Midfielders Joey Veerman and Jerdy Schouten, attacker Hirving Lozano, centre-back Adama Nagalo and full-back Sergino Dest will therefore miss out once more.

Winger Johan Bakayoko and defender Mauro Junior, who began on the bench in Amsterdam on Saturday, are likely to start with Ivan Perisic and Matteo Dams potentially dropping out of the line-up.

As for Girona, Alejandro Frances and Arnaut Danjuma are both struggling with hamstring injuries.

Michel's list of absentees is already a long one with Cristian Portu (ankle), Viktor Tsygankov (hamstring), Yaser Asprilla (ankle), Jhon Solis (muscular), Abel Ruiz (thigh), Ivan Martin (adductor) and goalkeeper Pau Lopez (hand) all likely to miss the trip to Eindhoven.

PSV are unbeaten in their last 48 home matches in all competitions, winning 40 and drawing eight since AZ’s 1-0 win at Philips Stadion in November 2022.

The Dutch side have scored at least two goals in 10 of their last 11 home games.

Girona have scored four goals in each of their last two matches and exactly two in their last two Champions League games.

They now boast four victories in their last six games in all competitions, having failed to win any of their previous six (D2 L4).

But the Spanish side have failed to score in four of their last six away games in La Liga and the Champions League.

Girona have committed the joint-most fouls in this season’s Champions League in their debut campaign in the competition.

Prediction

PSV cannot afford to drop any further points if they want to avoid being one of the 12 teams that miss out on the knockout stages.

They were uncharacteristically passive at Ajax on Saturday and Bosz will demand a reaction to that flat display when they get back in front of their home fans.

Philips Stadion has been a fortress for almost two years now and it would be a surprise if Girona were the team to end that unbeaten home sequence.

Michel’s side are capable of scoring goals with their pressing style, but they have been too easily undone at the back as injuries have adversely affected team cohesion.

The Dutch champions have the quality to exploit those weaknesses again here and can maintain their impressive recent streak of scoring at least two goals in front of their own supporters.
