Ten-man Chesterfield recorded their first home win since returning to the Football League as they beat Grimsby 2-1.

James Berry and Dilan Markanday scored for the hosts with Charles Vernam on target for Grimsby before Darren Oldaker was sent off for the Spireites.

Grimsby’s Jason Dadi Svanthorsson threatened early on, creating space for himself in the area before seeing his tame shot claimed comfortably by goalkeeper Ryan Boot.

Chesterfield manager Paul Cook was shown a yellow card in the ninth minute for dissent.

Markanday fired in a low shot which was saved by Jordan Wright before Chesterfield took the lead in the 27th minute.

The goal came when Berry whipped in a low free-kick from wide on the left-hand side and the ball went under Wright.

Markanday put Chesterfield further ahead in time added on at the end of the half, converting from six yards after the defence failed to clear.

Vernam reduced the arrears five minutes into the second half, firing into the roof of the net after a driving run from midfield.

Chesterfield were reduced to 10 men when Oldaker was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the 67th minute but they held on.
