Nigel Adkins understands fan anger after Tranmere lose at Morecambe
Tranmere boss Nigel Adkins said he will not walk away after his team suffered a damaging 2-0 defeat away to a Morecambe side who had not won at home this season.
Second-half goals from Yann Songo’o and Jamie Stott earn the hosts a much-needed victory that moved them off the foot of the League Two table and within two points of their freefalling opponents.
Rovers have won just one of their last eight league games and travelling fans let Adkins know their frustrations at full-time.
But the former Hull and Southampton boss said: “I understand the frustrations of the fans because it is football.
“But I won’t walk away. I care deeply and I give everything I have got and will continue to do all I can for the players.
“We appreciate the fans and it is hurting at the moment because we are not giving them what they want.”
Tranmere did start the game on the front foot but Harvey Saunders and Sol Solomon wasted glorious early opportunities when put through on goal.
But Songo’o headed the Shrimps into the lead in the 72nd minute and Stott added a second six minutes from time when he hammered home the loose ball in the box after Tranmere failed to clear a corner.
Adkins added: “It wasn’t the result we were after.
“We started well and had opportunities throughout the game but didn’t take them and that has been the story of our season.
“At the same we are not keeping enough clean sheets and both goals today came from set pieces and we have to be better and show more desire.”
Morecambe boss Derek Adams was a happy man after seeing his side ended their home hoodoo.
The Shrimps had not won in front of their own fans in the league since April 1.
And the victory, coupled with the Boxing Day success at fellow strugglers Carlisle, has boosted their hopes of survival.
“We are delighted to make it two wins in three games over Christmas against teams that are around us in the table,” Adams said.
“To come here, win and have a clean sheet was a great start to the year. I thought it was a very good performance against a side who have a lot of quality.
“We dealt with their threat really well and created some really good openings and should have perhaps won by more.
“We haven’t always had the results our performances have deserved this season but today we got our just rewards and I’m so pleased for our fans who have stuck with us all season and can go home happy tonight.”
