Roger Varian's Sed Maarib is expected to be contender at Doncaster on Wednesday

The St Leger Festival kicks off on Wednesday, with four action-packed days to look forward to at Doncaster.

The Group Three Sceptre Fillies' Stakes is the feature race of the day and we have picked five horses to follow across the meeting.

1.45pm - Take The Reins Nursery Handicap (7f)

Roger Varian's colt SED MAARIB got off the mark at the third time of asking at Beverley (7½f) back in July.

He prevailed by just under five lengths in the novice contest and looks like he has a bright future.

The son of American Pharoah has been handed an opening mark of 80 in this nursery.

He has one of the lowest weights in the race, which gives him a great chance of following up with a second straight success.

2.50pm - Mondialiste Leger Legends Classified Stakes (1m)

Tom Tate will hope for more of the same from First Dance
Tom Tate will hope for more of the same from First Dance

FIRST DANCE has been in excellent form this summer.

She came very close to completing a hat-trick at Newmarket (1m2f) last month when she finished second of seven runners, losing out on the top spot by just half a length.

This drop down to 1m works in her favour as the distance may have been a little stretch for her last time out.

Tom Tate's mare is the joint-highest rated runner in this field so this is an easier assignment than some of the handicap races she has been featuring in recently.

LiveScore selection: First Dance

3.25pm - Japan Racing Association Sceptre Fillies' Stakes (7f - Group 3)

Listed winner JUST BEAUTIFUL prevailed in her opening four races on the track so she deserves to line up in Group Three company here.

She came close to her first success at this level when runner-up in the Prix de Lieurey at Deauville.

Ivan Furtado's runner did not fare badly either in the Group One Falmouth Stakes, finishing just over two lengths behind Snow Lantern.

A return to the UK will help her chances here as she will encounter much faster ground than she did in France and is the one to beat in this fillies' contest over 7f.

4pm Cazoo Scarbrough Stakes (5f - Listed)

Robert Cowell looks to have another fine sprinter on his hands in Arecibo
Robert Cowell looks to have another fine sprinter on his hands in Arecibo

Robert Cowell is a trainer renowned for the success he has with his sprinters and he can claim another big race with ARECIBO

This horse finished second behind Oxted in the Group One King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier this season and that piece of form is the best any of these runners have produced this year.

A drop down to Listed level is going to really help this six-year-old add to his tally. He has been running consistently well in Group action and is also a long way ahead of his rivals in the ratings.

LiveScore selection: Arecibo

4.30pm - I Love Julie Parkes Handicap (1m2f)

FAISAL remains unbeaten as he continued the excellent form he showed as a two-year-old to score on his seasonal reappearance at Windsor (1m2f) back in May.

The son of Golden Horn was green at times but was still able to get the job done.

Once he settles fully, there may be much more to come from this colt.

This will be his toughest test to date but with his experience he is likely to shine and make it four wins from four starts.
