Souness bemused by Nketiah situation

Graham Souness admitted he is "amazed" Arsenal have not tied striker Eddie Nketiah down to a new contract following his standout display in yesterday’s 2-1 win over West Ham.

The 22-year-old, who is out of contract this summer, has impressed during three straight wins for the Gunners after being handed a chance in the starting XI by Mikel Arteta.

But as it stands, the striker will leave the Emirates at the end of the season having rejected several new contract offers as he looks to secure more regular first-team football.

And Souness has admitted his surprise at the situation, telling Sky Sports: "I thought Nketiah was the best player on the pitch against West Ham. He was always threatening.

"His contract is about to run out? I'm amazed by that.

"He will not be short of teams wanting him. He looked a threat throughout and he's up for the fight.

"I really like him and against West Ham, I thought he was fabulous.

"He's put himself in the shop window. If that is his general standard, he will not be short of teams wanting to take him."

Pick of the bunch

Jordan Pickford pulled off a stunning save to deny Cesar Azpilicueta
Jordan Pickford pulled off a stunning save to deny Cesar Azpilicueta

Leon Osman hailed Jordan Pickford’s heroic performance against Chelsea which kept Everton’s Premier League survival dream alive.

Pickford, 28, made five stops to secure a crucial clean sheet and help his side go within two points of safety after Richarlison's second-half finish put the Merseysiders ahead.

The pick of those saw him somehow manage to scramble across his goal-line to deny Cesar Azpilicueta from point-blank range,

On Pickford’s match-winning performance Osman told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Pickford's saves have kept Everton's dreams alive.

"That [Azpilicueta] save was incredible. Pickford has been criticised in the past because he has a tendency to do something rash. But not today. It was arguably his best-ever game for Everton in their most important game of the season.

"If Everton had lost today you would have felt they were out of the Premier League and the fans knew how important this was."

The FA are looking into an incident which saw Richarlison throw a flare into the crowd after scoring Everton’s winner against Chelsea on Sunday.

In the aftermath of opening the scoring in the 64th minute, the Brazilian threw a lit blue flare, which had been thrown from the Gwladys End of Goodison Park, into an area where there were no fans.

Everton said of the incident: "We will look into the matter.

"As far we we are concerned, Richarlison was attempting to throw it out of the ground."

Bardsley announces retirement

England and Manchester City goalkeeper Karen Bardsley will retire at the end of the season following a 13-year career in the women’s game.

The 37-year-old has 81 caps for England and won eight major trophies during her time with City.

The stopper has struggled with injury since the 2019 World Cup, last playing a league game in January 2021.

She told BBC Sport: "Ultimately I want people to know I always gave my best.

"When your body doesn't match what your mind wants to do, it's frustrating.

"The risk outweighed the rewards in terms of life after football. If I needed to go through another surgery like the ones I've been through I don't think it would be good for me, physically or psychologically.

"[Retirement] was a tough one to accept. If I had this conversation a few years ago I'd be bawling, I wouldn't be able to get a word out.

"I always tried to be the best leader and goalkeeper I could be."
