Leah Galton has handed Manchester United a timely boost by signing a new contract.

With United faltering in the Women's Super League title race and out of the Conti Cup, the pressure is mounting on Marc Skinner.

Galton's extension, which is believed to be two years with the option of a further 12 months, will come as a welcome relief for her under-fire boss.

The winger, 29, told the club's official website: "I'm delighted to continue my journey with United.

"I want to thank my friends, family and team-mates for their continued support — along with our wonderful fans, who have been great throughout my time here."

Skinner added: "Leah continues to lead by example, on and off the pitch, and epitomises everything a professional footballer should be.

"We're delighted to see her commit her future and look forward to many more winning experiences together."

Galton joined United's inaugural squad in 2018-19 and was a key part of the side that won promotion from the Championship that season.

Now in her sixth season with the club, she has made 125 appearances in all competitions and scored 36 goals.

But while Galton's future has been secured, question marks remain over Mary Earps.

The Lionesses keeper, 30, is out of contract in the summer and it had been suggested she may move on before the January window slammed shut.

Although a new deal looks increasingly unlikely, Galton knows how important Earps is to the team.

Speaking to LiveScore last year, she said: "Mary is so vital to the squad.

"It's so important to have a goalkeeper who talks to you from the back and she's probably one of the best in the game at that."

United host Brighton in the WSL at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday before travelling to Southampton for an FA Cup tie seven days later.

Skinner's side finished runners-up in the knockout competition last term, losing 1-0 to Chelsea courtesy of a Sam Kerr strike at Wembley.

They currently sit fourth in the WSL after 12 games and trail the table-topping Blues by 10 points.
