Alcohol Free storms to Sussex Stakes win

Owner Jeff Smith celebrated his first Sussex Stakes win for 37 years as Alcohol Free beat pre-race favourite Poetic Flare at Glorious Goodwood.

Following a slow start, the pace picked up midway through before the duo fought their way to the front and set up a tense climax.

But the three-year-old just edged through to give jockey Oisin Murphy and trainer Andrew Balding another Group One win.

She was victorious at Royal Ascot in June, winning the Coronation Stakes, and she certainly proved herself after only finishing third in the Falmouth Stakes behind Snow Lantern

Smith, who last won the race in 1984 with Chief Singer, could not hide his joy afterwards.

He said: "This filly is something else. The way she has won that, it's simply incredible.

"I'm thrilled to pieces and what a wonderful job Andrew and the whole team have done."

Last Empire grabs Oak Tree win

Kevin Ryan's Last Empire showed a gutsy display in winning the Group Three Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood.

It was the first time she had ran over seven furlongs but she performed strongly and saw off a late charge from Onassis

Ultimately, it was left too late and the five-year-old won by half a length.

Ryan said: "She's got the trip well there. If they're going to get it, they'll get it round here.

"She loved the soft ground, albeit a bit tacky today."

Fanshawe confident of Group One success

Trainer James Fanshawe believes Audarya has what it takes to win the Qatar Nassau Stakes at Goodwood today.

The French filly finished second in her seasonal reappearance at Royal Ascot last month, just losing out to Love in the Prince of Wales' Stakes, seven months after she won the Grade One Breeders' Cup in America.

Heavy conditions caused by rain improved to soft on Wednesday with the turf being good-to-soft in places, meaning it will be a tough test for the five-year-old who usually prefers firmer conditions — though her previous Prix Jean Romanet came on soft.

But Fanshaw is unwavering in his belief that she can add to her stateside success.

He said: "She's got better as she's got older and she's doing everything right at home.

"It was fast ground at Keeneland and Royal Ascot. But she shouldn't have any problem on easier going because it was very testing last year when she won the Romanet and very soft when she ran so well in the Prix de l'Opera."

Battaash handed a dozen rivals

Battaash is primed to strike at Goodwood

Four-time Goodwood winner Battaash will be up against 12 other runners in the King George Stakes at Goodwood tomorrow.

He is seeking to win five in a row and improve upon an underwhelming fourth in the King's Stand at Royal Ascot last month.

It has been a frustrating year for the seven-year-old, whose seasonal reappearance was delayed by injury, but his astonishing record at Goodwood stands him in good stead.

His closest challenger is likely to be Kevin Ryan's Curragh winner Glass Slippers, who finished second in last year's Group Two race.
