-
Aesterius to win the Molecomb Stakes

Blue Prince each-way in the HKJC World Pool Handicap

The second afternoon of Glorious Goodwood comes along on Wednesday and it set to be headlined by the Group 1 Sussex Stakes as 2000 Guineas winner Notable Speech and St James's Palace Stakes hero Rosallion clash in a potential trilogy showdown at 3.35pm.

It's another seven-race offering at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday, with the Oak Tree Stakes (2.25pm) and the Molecomb Stakes (3pm) offering the Group-race hors d'oeuvre before the iconic Sussex Stakes takes centre stage.

Here is everything you need to know for day two, including the day's best bets.

Day 2 – Key info

First race: 1.50pm Handicap

Feature race: 3.35pm Sussex Stakes

The Richard Hannon-trained Rosallion was a late absentee from the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

He was denied by Notable Speech in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in May but won the Irish version next time and claimed convincing revenge at Royal Ascot as Charlie Appleby's colt shed his unbeaten record.

The St James's Palace Stakes runner-up, Henry Longfellow, was clear of the rest at Ascot as Rosallion denied him very late on, and will now aim to go one spot better and snare his second Group 1 win.

The aforementioned Oak Tree Stakes (2.25pm) and Molecomb Stakes (3pm) bring a chunky helping of quality to the early part of the afternoon, while some competitive handicaps and the Alice Keppel Fillies' Conditions Stakes (4.45pm) make up the remainder of the second afternoon on the famous Sussex Downs.

Best bet of the day

Aesterius to win the Molecomb Stakes (3pm) @ 2/1

Jockey James Doyle could find plenty of joy on Aesterius
Jockey James Doyle could find plenty of joy on Aesterius

James Doyle has some cracking chances on day two and none more so than Aesterius for Archie Watson in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes over 5f.

The Mehmas colt won convincingly on debut at Bath over this trip in May and then ran well in the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, finishing a close fifth in a race that has worked out well.

That was enough to see him off favourite for the Listed Dragon Stakes at Sandown (5f, good) at the start of this month and he was a striking winner on the Esher turf that day. He moved well and kicked clear when Doyle called for his effort. This flying five-furlongs looks tailor-made for him now and, if avoiding any possible traffic woes, he should take some halting.

Best each-way bet of the day

Blue Prince in the HKJC World Pool Handicap (5.20pm) @ 15/2

Look out for David Evans' runner Blue Prince in the finale. He ran a cracker over course and distance when third in May despite meeting some trouble and that effort was flanked by excellent efforts at York and Chester.

His most recent start was also on the Roodee last month and is easily forgiven as he struggled to make inroads from the rear. He's on a good mark based on those previous runs and, following a busy spell, a month's layoff before this could be just the tonic for David Probert's partner.

Day 2 acca

Glorious Goodwood is the centre of attention this week and we will be pointing towards a Goodwood acca on each of the five days.

Bet 1: Back Jabaara to win the Oak Tree Stakes (2.25pm) @ 5/2

Roger Varian's Jabaara had bagged Listed wins at Musselburgh and Carlisle over 7f in June prior to finishing second to Porta Fortuna in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket this month. That July Course run makes her the standout here.

Bet 2: Back Henry Longfellow to win the Sussex Stakes (3.35pm) @ 11/8

Henry Longfellow made a decisive move at Royal Ascot in the home straight and only the sheer ability of Rosallion denied him the St James’s Palace Stakes win. They were a long way clear of the pack and, with that rival now an absentee here, compensation may be pending.

Bet 3: Back Cota De Caza to win the Alice Keppel Fillies' Conditions Stakes (4.45pm) @ 5/4

Cota De Caza cost connections the princely sum of €270,000 and the Sioux Nation filly was off the mark on her second start at Beverley over 5f on soft ground last month in the style of a promising filly. She could be Group-race quality before long.
