JM Jungle to win and each-way in the 4:10pm

The 2024 Goodwood Festival kicks off on Tuesday, with a Group 1 feature and plenty of supporting action at Group 2 level

The feature slot on the card belongs to the Goodwood Cup (3.35pm), a Group 1 event in which Gold Cup winner Kyprios aims to cement his position as top dog among the stayers.

The Group 2 races are both over seven furlongs, with the Lennox Stakes supported by the Vintage Stakes for two-year-olds.

Here is everything you need to know for day one, including the day's best bets.

Day 4 - Key info

First race: 1.50pm Chesterfield Cup

Feature race: 3.35pm Goodwood Cup

The Goodwood Cup is the second of two Group 1 races for all-aged stayers, following the Gold Cup at Ascot in June. Since becoming a Group 1 in 2017, it has been won by top stayers including Stradivarius, Trueshan and Kyprios.

The last-named of those three returns in 2024. Kyprios missed most of 2023 but has looked a more straightforward horse in regaining his supremacy among the stayers this year, including a game win at Ascot a little less than six weeks ago.

The Lennox Stakes is similarly one of the primary races for horses at the intermediate seven-furlong distance. There is no Group 1 race for such horses in Britain.

The Vintage Stakes (2.25pm) is a 2,000 Guineas trial, and although it is many years since a horse did the double, plenty of Group 1-winning milers have emerged from the race.

Best bet of the day

Kinross to win the Lennox Stakes (3pm) @ 3/1

In two of the last three years, Kinross has won the Lennox Stakes. On the other occasion, he was second. He can go three from four here, having had a satisfactory preparation along his usual lines.

Kinross did not run in 2024 until the Chipchase Stakes on Northumberland Plate day. He tanked through that race and lost only because of a lack of race-fitness. He then went to the July Cup, in which his early position in rear proved too much to overcome.

That run is hard to completely excuse, but in the circumstances it is forgivable. Kinross's season starts from Goodwood onwards and connections will have left nothing to chance ahead of his first major target of the campaign.

Best each-way bet of the day

JM Jungle in the 4.10pm @ 15/2

JM Jungle looks to hold solid claims with his stable having won the last three renewals of this contest

John Quinn, now joined on the licence by son Sean, has won this race in each of the last three years with Lord Riddiford. That horse is back again but is nine now and it could be time to hand over to a ready-made successor from the same yard in JM Jungle.

This horse won at the Goodwood Festival last year and is at his best on speed tracks. He has run well at Epsom, York and Haydock as well as Goodwood. He looked to be coming back to his best at the Curragh last time and it is notable that Jason Hart takes the ride.

Day 1 acca

Everybody loves a Goodwood accumulator and we will be pointing towards one on each of the five days this week. On day four, our treble pays more than 43/1 with LiveScore Bet.

Bet 1: Back The Parthenon to win the Vintage Stakes (2.25pm) @ 7/2

The Vintage tends to go to Classic hopes and this horse, by Kingman out of an Oaks second, fits the bill on that score.

Bet 2: Back Kyprios to win the Goodwood Cup (3.35pm) @ 3/1

Although Kyprios was a bit of a bad boy in his youth, he looked as straight as a die when regaining the Gold Cup last time and he can stamp his authority in the division.

Bet 3: Back Executive Decision to win the 5.55pm @ 6/1

This filly won the same race last year and comes in off the back of an encouraging fourth at Ascot, in which she took a wide course in an even stronger race than this.
