Mee's glee at joining Bees on a free

Brentford have announced the free signing of defender Ben Mee from Burnley on a two-year deal.

The experienced defender, 32, left the Clarets this summer after 10 years at Turf Moor, during which he racked up 217 Premier League appearances.

Mee has become the West London outfit’s fourth signing of the summer after Aaron Hickey, Keane Lewis-Potter and Thomas Strakosha.

Bees boss Thomas Frank said of his new centre-back: "I am very happy that we have signed Ben. He will add a lot of quality and experience to the squad. 

"He had six good years for Burnley in the Premier League. I really love his defensive mindset. He knows how to defend the box, he knows how to block a shot and he knows how to win duels.

"He will bring leadership and communication to the team, which is very attractive. He has a very good left foot and will be very good for us on set-pieces in both boxes. 

"I am looking forward to adding him to the squad."

Former Reds chairman Moores dies

Former Liverpool chairman and owner David Moores has died at the age of 76.

Moores served as chairman for 16 years from 1991 and became honorary president after selling his majority stake in the club in 2007.

The Reds won 10 major trophies during his tenure, including their memorable Champions League triumph in 2005.

A club statement read: "Liverpool is deeply saddened by the passing of former chairman and owner David Moores.

"The thoughts of everyone at the club are with David’s family and friends at this difficult time."

Nacional fans mask up for Suarez

Fans of Uruguayan club Nacional wore Luis Suarez masks during their latest game in an effort to convince the legendary striker to return to the club.

The 35-year-old began his career at the Montevideo-based side before going on to forge a successful career at Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Having been released by Atleti this summer, multiple reports say El Pistolero is now on the verge of a move back to his homeland.

Nacional fans have been running a Twitter campaign called #SuarezANacional this summer and their efforts, which saw 20,000 supporters don Suarez masks in the game against Cerrito, look to be paying off.

Club president Jose Fuentes has reportedly been in talks with Suarez and said earlier this week: "If there is a chance I will do the impossible so that he comes. 

"We are willing to give him all the love he deserves and treat him like what he is, a football idol. 

"The doors of Nacional are open, you just have to tell us what you need. We are delighted that he can come."

Gosling reveals all on Hornets relegation

Dan Gosling has hit out at the "disgraceful" attitudes inside Watford’s training ground during their relegation season last term and criticised former bosses Claudio Ranieri and Roy Hodgson’s coaching methods.

A disappointing campaign for the Hornets saw them drop down to the Championship with only 23 points, just 12 months after being promoted.

Their struggles saw them go through three managers across the season, with Xisco Munoz sacked just seven games in as Ranieri took over, before the Italian was replaced with Hodgson in January.

The 32-year-old is now looking ahead to a fresh start at Vicarage Road next campaign under former Forest Green manager Rob Edwards.

Speaking to the Watford Observer, the midfielder said: "That time with Ranieri was just really unenjoyable. The training we did, the spirit they created, the staff that came with him — the whole thing was just miserable. They were miserable, and it made it miserable.

"I was surprised they lasted four months to be honest. I have been in football a long time, and so have a few boys in the squad, and that time was as bad as it can get.

"If you're going out on the training pitch and just doing five-a-side games day after day, it is literally nothing football. It's kid's football. As a pro, you don't learn anything from it.

"To be fair to Roy, what he did in training was very repetitive, but at least it was game-like situations. You do need to freshen it up a bit though. This is 2022."

Gosling’s criticism did not stop at the managers either, with the former Everton and Bournemouth man shedding light on some of the questionable attitudes among the players.

He added: "There were a lot of disgraceful attitudes here last season and that's ultimately the reason we went down. It wasn't a question of ability. 

"They signed [Ozan] Tufan from a Turkish club. He was here on loan. Is he going to really care if the club goes down? He knew that whatever happened, he could go back to wherever he came from. He wasn't bothered and he wasn't that fit either.

"It was a real disgrace, easily the worst dressing room I've ever been a part of. So now that we're clearing the decks and trying to build something new is refreshing."

Christian Pulisic says he is feeling sharp during Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the USA but declared there is more to come from him next season.

The American international was the goalscorer in the Blues' penalty shootout loss to Charlotte in North Carlolina after drawing 1-1 in normal time.

But with it being only the West London club’s second game since returning as a squad for pre-season, the 23-year-old thinks there were plenty of positives from the run-out.

He said: "I think we're still starting up our season, because it's only our second game together. We're still working on some things but I thought we had some good moments. They really surprised us and then with penalties, anything can happen.

"It was a big test. They looked like they were in season, in form and very fit. They played a good match. Charlotte really impressed me, and they have come a long way as a soccer city.

"There are some moments where I feel I can be even better but I'm happy with the goal. 

"I'm feeling sharp but I still have more levels to go to and I'm looking forward to continuing to grind and get better."

Orlando is the next stop on Chelsea’s American road trip as they face London rivals Arsenal on Saturday night before heading back to the UK.

Darwin's perfect night

Jurgen Klopp lauded striker Darwin Nunez’s "perfect night" after Liverpool’s summer signing hit four goals in a 5-0 friendly win over RB Leipzig. 

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring before the Uruguayan struck four in the second half at the Red Bull Arena on Thursday night.

Nunez has been under close scrutiny since his £64million switch to Anfield from Benfica and his German boss was pleased to see him silence some doubters for the time being at least.

Klopp said: "That's the best way obviously to stop all these discussions.

"We always think that if you pay a lot of money then the players feel no pressure. They are all completely normal human beings.

"This generation of players read social media, which is really not smart, but they do.

"He's a different striker to what we have or what we had, but he's a really good one.

"That's of course a perfect night for him."

Ten Hag backs Maguire to silence boo boys

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has told captain Harry Maguire that good performances are the perfect way to silence the boo boys.

The defender was the subject of vocal criticism during United’s pre-season friendly win over Crystal Palace from supporters inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia on Tuesday. 

Boos rang out every time the 29-year-old touched the ball and the Red Devils manager has confirmed the team were aware of it at the time.

The Dutch boss said: "We heard but we see [that] if you perform, it slows down, and I think he, Harry Maguire, and the team, impressed by the way they play.

"I don't think it's a matter to find out about if I can understand it, it's about how can we change it and the team and Harry himself by performing. That's what we are working on. That is the only focus."

Laca out with wasp stings

Lyon have been stung by Alexandre Lacazette’s potential absence for their friendly with Feyenoord on Sunday after a wasp attack on the Frenchman.

Lacazette suffered multiple wasp stings in the forest surrounding the French side’s hotel in the Netherlands, where they are on a pre-season camp.

ESPN say the 31-year-old is being monitored on a day-to-day basis to see if he can take part in the clash at De Kuip this weekend.

With the striker now potentially unavailable, it remains to be seen which of Lyon’s players will make a beeline for a starting spot up front in Peter Bosz’s side.

Lacazette has returned to Lyon this summer after departing the Ligue 1 side to join Arsenal in 2017.

Gayle forces Stoke switch

Striker Dwight Gayle has joined Championship side Stoke on a permanent deal from Newcastle for an undisclosed fee.

The 32-year-old has signed a two-year contract at the bet365 Stadium after falling out of favour at the Magpies in recent seasons.

While struggling to hit the heights at Premier League level, Gayle has proven pedigree in the Championship having scored 59 goals in 100 second-tier games during spells at Peterborough, Newcastle and West Brom.

Potters boss Michael O’Neill said: "Dwight’s track record, particularly in the Championship, is exceptional and there were a number of clubs chasing him so we are really delighted he has chosen to join us."

The ex-Crystal Palace marksman is Stoke’s sixth summer arrival after Josh Laurent, Aden Flint, Gavin Kilkenny, Harry Clarke and Liam McCarron.
