Wiegman the 'winner'

Alessia Russo has hailed England manager Sarina Wiegman as a "winner" ahead of the Women's World Cup final.

The Lionesses face Spain in Sunday's showpiece with both teams chasing a first ever World Cup trophy.

Dutch boss Wiegman, who led England to Euro 2022 glory last summer, has reached at least the final in all four major international tournaments she has managed at — subsequently losing just once.

Referring to the 53-year-old England boss, striker Russo said: "The first thing that comes to mind is she's a winner.

"She sets the standard so high every day in training and she leads with real class. It's great for us as players because it's so competitive and we're all focused on the same goal.

"Away from the pitch she lets us enjoy our own time and switch off, which is really important. She's honest and up front and that's something as a player I really respect."

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed Chelsea skipper Reece James is set to miss a "few weeks" after injuring his hamstring.

James, who was recently handed the armband by the Argentine, was withdrawn after 77 minutes as the Blues drew 1-1 with Liverpool last Sunday.

Pochettino said: "It's a sad moment because he's our captain.

"He was so excited and full of energy to be our captain. We are going to assess him day by day.

"For sure he's going to [come back] stronger than he was. It's a few weeks."

Chelsea travel to London rivals West Ham this weekend, with vice-captain Ben Chilwell expected to lead the team.

Erik ten Hag is "happy" Harry Maguire is staying at Manchester United and has challenged the defender to fight for a spot.

Maguire, 30, who made just eight Premier League starts last term, was set to join West Ham but a reported £30million move fell through.

He was stripped of the Red Devils captaincy by Ten Hag in July but the Dutch manager insists the England international can still be a success in his side.

Ten Hag, 53, said: "[Maguire] knows what I expect from a centre-back. He can do it.

"He has the abilities to do it, so he has to show it. It's about character, to be convinced to play that role.

"He has all the abilities and it's up to him when the time is there."

Eddie Howe has confirmed Newcastle are keen on signing Chelsea defender Lewis Hall.

The Toon are reportedly closing in on a deal for the 18-year-old full-back, which would make him their four signing of the summer.

Asked about the Cobham graduate this morning, Howe said: "Let's wait and see what happens. He's a player I like, very versatile, really good potential.

"If we do bring a player in, that will be our transfer business concluded, unless [we have] injuries."

The Magpies boss also revealed the move for Hall would be on a loan basis.

Forest Deen

Former Watford and Birmingham striker Troy Deeney has joined Forest Green Rovers as a player-coach.

He will provide support for manager David Horseman alongside assistant Louis Carey after completing his UEFA A Licence.

Deeney, 35, was a free agent after leaving the Blues at the end of last season and will bring a wealth of experience to the New Lawn Stadium with more than 600 senior games under his belt.

Horseman said: "We are absolutely delighted to get a player of Troy's calibre. We know he is a proven goalscorer but also a creator for others.

"He is very much part of our coaching team and we will do everything we can to help him on his coaching journey."
