Tommy Paul has form after winning Queen's and will now be looking to down Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday

- Carlos Alcaraz has dropped a set in four of his last six Grand Slam matches
- Tommy Paul has won at least a set in three of his four previous meetings with Alcaraz
- Recommended bet:
Carlos Alcaraz to win 3-1

Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open last month to take his Grand Slam haul to three at the tender age of 21 and the Spaniard will be eyeing a successful title defence at Wimbledon.

The Spanish supremo defeated seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in five thrilling sets to be crowned champion at the All England Club last season, although he may have been playing better then than the current level he is operating at.

Alcaraz eased to straight-set successes in his opening two assignments against Mark Lajal and Aleksandar Vukic but he needed five sets in round three against Frances Tiafoe and was taken to four in his round-of-16 duel with Ugo Humbert.

And, if anything, this quarter-final showdown with Tommy Paul looks even tougher as the American won at Queen’s Club in the build up to Wimbledon and has been sustaining that level at the All England Club.

The 12th seed, on a nine-match winning streak on grass, has eased to 3-0 victories in his last two matches against Alexander Bublik and Roberto Bautista Agut.

Paul is bidding to make the semi-final of a Grand Slam for only the second time, having done so at the Australian Open in 2023, and he will be buoyed by his previous clashes with Alcaraz.

In four previous meetings, they have two wins apiece, and Paul is 29/10 with LiveScore Bet to spring a surprise. Unsurprisingly, Alcaraz is the 1/4 favourite with to advance to the last four.

The stats

Paul has won his last nine grass-court matches, six of which have been recorded in straight sets.

The American has won two of his four previous meetings with Alcaraz and only failed to get a set on the board in one of those rivalries.

Four of the 11 sets these two have contested have gone to a tiebreak, which includes the opening set in two of their four meetings.

Alcaraz has dropped a set in four of his last six Grand Slam matches, which includes his last two matches at Wimbledon.

However, the Spaniard has lost only one of his last 18 outings on grass and he is on an 11-match winning streak at Wimbledon.

Prediction

While Alcaraz is still in the mix and will believe he has what it takes to defend his Wimbledon crown, there have been a few moments of angst for the Spaniard.

The 21-year-old found himself two sets to one down in his third-round contest with Tiafoe before reeling in the American and then he needed four sets to dump out last-16 rival Humbert, losing 6-1 in the third set when seemingly in full control.

Even in his opening two wins over Lajal and Vukic, the opening set went to a tiebreak which suggests the in-form Paul should get chances to give Alcaraz some cause for concern.

Paul has won at least a set in three of his four meetings with Alcaraz, landing an upset on two occasions, and his confidence should be flowing following his nine-match winning run.

That said, Alcaraz has still been able to produce his best tennis when under the maximum of pressure and it is likely he will find a way to win this quarter-final duel, although not without a push from Paul.
