Maxwel Cornet scored a late winner as Burnley beat Everton 3-2

Maxwel Cornet hit a late winner as Burnley came from behind to beat Everton 3-2 at Turf Moor, moving to within one point of the Toffees who sit perilously close to the drop in 17th.

The Clarets opened the scoring in the 12th minute as Nathan Collins met Cornet's inswinging corner at the far post with a cushioned volley.

The visitors were awarded two penalties before the break however with Richarlison dispatching both to put Frank Lampard's side into a 2-1 lead.

Sean Dyche's men levelled the scores once more in the 57th minute when Jay Rodriguez hammered in from close range.

The hosts' comeback was completed five minutes before full-time as substitute Matej Vydra pulled the ball back from the byeline for Cornet who fired in from 12 yards.

Burnley striker Rodriguez talked up the importance of a win that significantly boosts the Lancashire club's survival hopes.

He said: "This is massive, we know that, we know Everton are in the same position.

"This is a big game for momentum, we've got a tough game to play with Norwich. They've got a great manager and great players.

"But this is all about us, we've got to continue to play how we did in the second half. It's about the momentum, but a special night tonight.

"We have to win every game now, we have nine games now. It's important for us to be on a winning run, we can't take anything for granted.

"To get one ahead and two sloppy goals to concede is disappointing. Credit to the lads, [in the] second half we showed how we can play. This was everything. We needed that moment.

"We always talk about relegation. We have a great group of lads who work together. Everton are a great side and we hurt them and cut them open a few times. We still have that belief."

Everton boss Lampard bemoaned individual errors from his men that cost them the game.

He said: "It's the points, isn't it? We're now a point ahead of Burnley. We knew the rules before the game — if you win it you have a nice little gap. That's the situation.

"It's football, in three days we have to recover for our next game. We had mistakes for their goals and mistakes in not being clinical enough to take the numerous chances that should have had us clear at that point.

"But 2-1, the way we were playing in the second half was for us to go and score and make it 3-1. We don't do that. Then we just concede from individual mistakes."

Burnley scored first, fell behind, and then came back to win a Premier League match for the first time in their history. For Everton, it was the first time they had conceded first, gone ahead, and then lost a Premier League game since October 2019 against Brighton.

Lampard has lost all five of his away league games in charge of the Toffees making him the first manager to do that since Jan Siewert at Huddersfield in 2019, who lost his first seven.

Although his winner tonight was his first league goal since January, Cornet has scored more than twice as many top-flight goals as any other Clarets player this season (seven).

The visitors became the first team in Premier League history to score two spot-kicks in the first half of an away match.

Richarlison became only the third player in top-flight history to score two penalties in an away game and end on the losing side after Peter Beardsley in February 1994 for Newcastle at Wimbledon and David Unsworth in August 1999 for Everton at Tottenham.

The Brazilian also became the first Blues player to score a Premier League goal under each of the last five managers to take charge of them in the competition (Marco Silva, Duncan Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benitez and Lampard).
