Unai Emery praised Aston Villa for performing in the "correct way" during their stalemate with Everton which saw them miss out on moving joint-top of the Premier League.

Chances were at a premium at Goodison Park with goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Emiliano Martinez both producing impressive stops on the rare occasions they were called into action.

Remarkably, the result marked Emery's first goalless draw in 97 English top-flight matches and the Spaniard chose to take the positives despite seeing his side fall short of three points.

Emery said: "It's not enough for us, the point we have achieved today, but I think how we faced Everton here is the correct way.

"We conceded a few chances, a few opportunities around our box but we controlled the game and created more than enough chances to win.

"The last 20 minutes right up until added time we were trying to play the same way, we never lost our mind and we kept our game plan in our mind.

"This is the way. We are increasing our level, feeling confident and playing in the same style that we demand."

Villa saw a very early goal ruled out when Alex Moreno drilled home from 25 yards — VAR intervening to award an offside in the build-up after a four-minute review.

But Emery, 52, had no complaints over the eventual outcome. He added: "I accept the decision. The most important thing is to take the right decision and if it takes a long time then you have to accept it.

"We stopped the crowd and playing away, the first step is to do that. It is not easy and today we did good work.

"This is the most proud I am, with how we stopped chances from them.

"I am happy because we did what we practiced before the match. My expectation before the match was to have less control and chances than we did."
