Five Premier League summer signings failing to shine

While it is too early to write off summer signings, some have made faster starts at their new Premier League clubs than others.

Declan Rice, James Maddison and Moussa Diaby, for example, have hit the ground running at Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa.

We take a look at the players who have struggled to make the same kind of impact.

Andre Onana

Signing Andre Onana was meant to help Manchester United revolutionise their style of play — but that has been undermined by mistakes reminiscent of David de Gea's final years at Old Trafford.

The goalkeeper has shown glimpses of ability to play out from the back, which has been overshadowed by blunders against Brighton, Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

Onana, 27, will be given time to find his feet but is one of the reasons his side have started the season so poorly.

Mason Mount

United's summer transfer business is under the microscope again after a quiet start to Mason Mount's Old Trafford career.

Spending over £50million on the England international always felt strange considering Bruno Fernandes is a regular in his natural position.

And Erik ten Hag has seemed confused as to how best to use his new signing, resulting in a series of anonymous performances so far.

Kai Havertz

Mikel Arteta has attempted to transition Kai Havertz from a forward into a midfielder but the German has not been able to make a telling impact on Arsenal matches.

After an underwhelming start to his Gunners career, the 24-year-old was charitably handed a penalty in the win at Bournemouth that was intended to boost his confidence — only to be dropped for the next league game against Manchester City.

Arteta continues to defend the German in public but must be becoming concerned at his lack of impact.

Youri Tielemans

Youri Tielemans has struggled for game time at Aston Villa

Reports claim Youri Tielemans is already looking for a way out of Villa Park after not yet starting a league game for the club he signed for in the summer.

In September, the midfielder said: "The situation is not pleasant. I told the manager that I came to Villa to play.

"He understands me but at the moment he prefers to play with the two midfielders from last season."

That "situation" has not improved since, with Villa in decent form without their new recruit and it seems likely he could be out of the door as soon as January.

Raul Jimenez

Replacing Aleksandar Mitrovic's 14 Premier League goals from last season was never going to be an easy task for Fulham — and Raul Jimenez does not look up to it.

The Mexican has not been the same player since suffering a serious head injury while playing for Wolves at Arsenal in 2020 and failing to score in eight appearances for the Cottagers suggests he is not about to recapture his form.

Of all the strikers to have played over 500 Premier League minutes this season, Jimenez has had the second-fewest shots — a further indication of his lack of threat.
