- Recommended bet: Austria to win

Poland and Austria suffered expected opening-game defeats but the signs were far from discouraging for both outfits and they may fancy their chances in Berlin.

Poland opened the scoring against Netherlands and, despite succumbing to a relatively swift equaliser, were in the game until Wout Weghorst notched a late winner.

Austria were even more impressive as they had more of the ball against the star-studded France, only to be undone by a first-half own goal from Maximilian Wober.

Team news

Poland's all-time leading goalscorer Robert Lewandowski is set to return against Austria

The big news for Poland is that star-striker Robert Lewandowski has returned to full training and is likely to start up front alongside Adam Buksa here, although centre-back Bartosz Salamon is a doubt after injuring his finger in the opener.

Austria are without any selection concerns, and after a solid performance against France Ralf Rangnick could stick with the same starting XI.

Prediction

In a group containing France and Netherlands, this was always going to be Poland and Austria’s best chance of picking up crucial group-stage points in Euro 2024 and Ralf Rangnick’s men could come away with all the spoils in Berlin.

Das Team looked rock-solid in their opener with World Cup-finalists France, with the underdogs matching Les Bleus for shots on target and enjoying 52 per-cent possession.

The end result was still the same after Wober turned Kylian Mbappe’s cross into his own net, but the signs were encouraging for Austria and they should be quietly confident as they prepare to meet Poland.

Poland also performed above expectations, taking an early lead against Netherlands and holding firm even after Cody Gakpo’s equaliser.

They were largely dominated by Netherlands after the opener, but Michal Probierz’s team had their moments and can count themselves unlucky to have lost to a late Weghorst goal.

The Poles can also welcome all-time leading scorer Lewandowski back among their ranks, but it may not be enough here.

They scored just ten goals in Euro 2024 qualifying, finishing third behind Albania and Czech Republic before beating Wales on penalties in the play-off final despite failing to have a single shot on target.

They now face an Austria side that have been in excellent form in the build up to this tournament, winning six of their seven games prior to their loss to France and putting six past Turkey in March.
