Andre Onana saved a penalty with the final kick of the game as Manchester United beat FC Copenhagen 1-0 to spark their Champions League campaign into life.

Harry Maguire headed home in the 72nd minute for the hosts, a goal which proved to be the winner after Onana denied Jordan Larsson from the spot at the death.

Goodbye, Sir Bobby

Old Trafford said goodbye to their greatest ever prior to kick-off with an emotional tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton, who sadly passed away last Saturday aged 86.

Manager Erik ten Hag laid a wreath in the centre circle accompanied by Charlton's former team-mate Alex Stepney and Under-19s captain Dan Gore — signifying the 1966 World Cup winner's impact on the past, the present and the future at United.

The touching moment, followed by an impeccably observed minute's silence, was a fitting way for the Theatre of Dreams faithful to pay their respects to the England icon.

Half-time boos

After two straight defeats to open their Champions League campaign, an uninspiring display was once again greeted with boos when the half-time whistle blew.

A lively start from the visitors did little to gee up the crowd early on and while the Red Devils grew into the clash, the final ball was always missing.

Rasmus Hojlund, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes tried their best to change that but the best chance of the half belonged to their Danish counterparts, who struck the post through Diogo Goncalves.

Maguire's moment

Maguire's United redemption continued as he headed home a precious winner.

It looked to be another disappointing evening for the Red Devils before their much-maligned centre-back met Christian Eriksen's cross to finally put the hosts ahead.

Having enjoyed a solid run in the side of late due to injuries elsewhere, the England international now looks to be slowly becoming a man Ten Hag can trust.

Eriksen impact

Ten Hag was clearly not happy with what he had seen from his side and the Dutch boss acted by replacing Sofyan Amrabat with the more attack-minded Eriksen after the interval.

His introduction seemed to spark life into United, with the 31-year-old nearly slamming home from close range but for a brilliant stop by goalkeeper Theo Sander.

The Denmark international would play a crucial role in the deadlock breaker, though, as his perfectly flighted cross invited Maguire to crash the header home.

Onana, that's his name

Goalkeeper Onana is another player who enjoyed a night of vindication after his dramatic penalty save in stoppage time.

The Red Devils looked set to be punished for an unconvincing display when McTominay was adjudged to have fouled Mohamed Elyounoussi in the dying seconds.

But the Cameroonian came up trumps, brilliantly getting across to his left to earn his first Champions League win as a United player.
