Both teams to score

Hosts Germany return to action on Saturday night as they meet Denmark in Dortmund in a Euro 224 last-16 clash.

The Danes finished second behind England in Group C, the lowest-scoring pool at the tournament.

Despite that, we should still be in for some entertainment in Dortmund, as this German side has been occasionally shaky at the back.

There are gaps to exploit for the Danes, who managed to create chances across an unbeaten three-game start to the tournament.

Team news

Hosts Germany went with a strong side in their final group game and that’s come at a cost, with Jonathan Tah suspended after picking up his second booking of the tournament.

Borussia Dortmund central defender Nico Schlotterbeck is set to step in at his home stadium.

Denmark also have a big absentee through suspension, with midfielder Morten Hjulmand getting booked against Serbia, so Thomas Delaney should step in at the base of midfield.

Jonathan Tah will be absent due to suspension when Germany take on Denmark in Dortmund.

The stats

Denmark have had 14 shots on target across their first three games of the tournament, while each of Germany’s first three games have seen a goal scored inside the first 30 minutes.

Germany’s only clean sheet of the tournament against Hungary saw them face 1.2 Expected Goals and the tournament hosts have managed just three clean sheets in their last 17 internationals.

The Danes had an xG of 3.2 across their group matches.

Prediction

Germany have made a strong start at Euro 2024, but the same issues around their defensive set-up remain. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has made a string of high-profile mistakes of late and they’ve kept just three clean sheets across their last 17 internationals.

Their clean sheet against Hungary was their first at a major tournament since 2016. Even still, they conceded some good chances in that game, with the Magyars racking up an Expected Goals tally of 1.2 in a 2-0 defeat.

Denmark will surely test them, having had 14 shots on target throughout the group stage. The Danes have scored in five of their last six matches and they finished the last round having underperformed their xG tally across the games, scoring twice while recording 3.2 xG.

The Danes play with two strikers and Christian Eriksen in support, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has pushed up to play a role in the attack.

While the hosts are worthy favourites to progress to the next round, they’re still liable for defensive issues.

The further they get, the more of a concern Germany’s backline becomes.

This Denmark side should test them, while Germany’s first three games saw them rack up chances and goals and, as a result, both teams to score appeals in this contest.
