Freund rejects Chelsea

Christoph Freund will remain as FC Salzburg’s sporting director after rejecting interest from Chelsea.

Blues owner Todd Boehly was reportedly keen on bringing Freund to Stamford Bridge to work as the club’s sporting director alongside new manager Graham Potter.

Some media outlets had indicated an agreement between the two clubs was close but the 45-year-old has revealed his decision to stay with the Austrian champions, who he is under contract with until 2026.

In a club statement, Freund said: "As I have already confirmed in interviews, Chelsea were interested in me.

"When such a big club asks, it not only honours me and the work of FC Salzburg, it is of course also a circumstance that entails personal considerations.

"But I've come to the conclusion that I'm in the best of hands with FC Salzburg and that a change is out of the question for me.

"We're in the middle of a very intense phase and have important tasks to do in the Bundesliga, [Austrian] Cup and Champions League — that's where my focus and concentration is all on."

Henderson replaces injured Phillips

Jordan Henderson is a late addition to the England squad

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been called up to replace the injured Kalvin Phillips in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Henderson, 32, was not in the original Three Lions group named last week after missing his club’s last five games with a hamstring problem.

But the midfielder has now joined up with the rest of Southgate's players at St George’s Park ahead of the Nations League double-header with Italy and Germany.

Manchester City enforcer Phillips withdrew last week with a shoulder injury that may require surgery.

Henderson, who has 69 caps, has played only once for his nation in 2022 — a 2-1 friendly win over Switzerland in March.

England head to the San Siro to face Euro 2020 final opponents Italy on Friday before hosting old foes Germany at Wembley on Monday.

FA Cup replays face the axe

FA Cup replays could be scrapped as part of a shake-up of English football's calendar

Premier League clubs will consider scrapping FA Cup replays at a meeting tomorrow.

Discussions over major changes to the Carabao Cup are also set to take place as part of the New Deal for Football talks.

Clubs are concerned over increased strain on players during a packed calendar — set to be made worse by the planned expansion to the Champions League in 2024.

FA Cup replays were scrapped during the 2020-21 campaign due to an increased backlog caused by the coronavirus pandemic, while they were also not used in the third and fourth round last term.

Lewa to wear Ukraine armband

Laureus ambassador Andriy Shevchenko has presented Poland captain Robert Lewandowski with a blue and yellow armband

Poland captain Robert Lewandowski will wear a blue and yellow armband at the World Cup to show solidarity with Ukraine.

Ukraine remain at war following Russia's invasion in February.

They will not compete at Qatar this winter after losing to Wales in June's qualifying play-off.

But Lewandowski, 34, who continually voices his support for Poland’s European neighbours, will ensure their colours are still represented at the tournament after being given the unique armband by former Ukraine manager Andriy Shevchenko.

He told Laureus: "I believe that as athletes we should use the power of sport for good.

"I’m going to take Andriy’s armband with me to the World Cup in November as a reminder that Ukrainian people are not alone and are not forgotten.

"It means a lot to me to stand here with Andriy, a footballer and a man who has used his voice and platform to influence positive change."

Ex-AC Milan and Chelsea forward Shevchenko added: "For me, the captain’s armband is a symbol of leadership, strength and passion for your country.

"I want to pass this armband to Robert to thank him for his support, voice and platform in supporting my country and calling for peace."

Unsworth takes up Oldham hotseat

David Unsworth has been appointed manager of Oldham

National League side Oldham have appointed former Everton coach David Unsworth as their new first-team manager.

Unsworth has signed a three-year deal to become John Sheridan’s successor at Boundary Park as they look to regain their place in the EFL following last season’s relegation.

The former defender spent eight years in various roles at the Toffees, becoming caretaker boss on two separate occasions in 2016 and 2017.

He left the Merseyside club in April in order to take up a managerial post elsewhere.

Unsworth, 48, said: "This is the perfect job for me and I’m hugely excited to be joining the club at this time.

"I’ve had opportunities to become a first-team manager at a number of clubs over the past three of four years but they haven’t felt quite right.

"This is the right club, the right fit, with the right owners and board of directors.

"I genuinely think this club is a sleeping giant, one that can climb up not just one league, but two or three, in a short space of time."

Suarez on the move

Luis Suarez is set to leave boyhood club Nacional

Luis Suarez is set to leave Nacional in November — only three months after re-signing for his boyhood club.

Suarez, 35, returned to his first professional team earlier this summer after leaving Atletico Madrid.

The Uruguayan striker has performed well for the Montevideo outfit, scoring four goals in his first eight league games, but it has been revealed he will become a free agent once again before the World Cup.

Club president Jose Fuentes told ESPN: "When the Uruguayan Championship ends, Suarez will leave, that’s how we arranged his deal.

"It’s what we agreed and he made a huge effort to come here.

"I say this to avoid generating fan expectations. Suarez is leaving. We’ve asked him, and he answered the same thing as before."

Suarez, a 132-cap international for Uruguay, is in line to play in his fourth World Cup in Qatar this winter.
