Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has defended his decision to rotate his squad after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Fulham on Tuesday night.

The Australian made nine changes to the side that beat Bournemouth in the Premier League at the weekend, with James Maddison, Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero all dropping to the bench.

Richarlison's equaliser in the second half was not enough to save Spurs, who were ultimately knocked out on penalties at Craven Cottage.

After the game, Postecoglou said: "Obviously disappointed with the outcome, getting knocked out of the cup.

"A lot of the boys tonight, it was their first start of the season. We lacked cohesion and fluency, but I really liked the way we hung in there.

"It is my priority [the cups] but there is no European football so how am I going to find out about our players?

"What opportunity would I have to do that other than the game? They are all part of our club.

"They're not just here to make up the numbers. They keep working hard and deserved the opportunity to go out and play tonight."

Lockyer holds the key

Tom Lockyer has been recalled for Wales

Luton defender Tom Lockyer has earned a recall to the Wales national side after recovering from heart surgery following his collapse in the Championship play-off final in May.

Rob Page's side return to action in Cardiff on September 7 against South Korea before facing Latvia four days later in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

Wales have only won one of their last 12 games and find themselves in a sticky spot in Group D with a solitary victory from four outings so far.

Page has also put his faith in the uncapped trio of Tom King, Morgan Fox and Liam Cullen and recalled Bolton's Josh Sheehan.

Daniel James has been ruled out of international duty with an injury but there is a place for Cardiff midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Wales squad in full: Wayne Hennessey, Danny Ward, Adam Davies, Tom King, Ben Davies, Morgan Fox, Joe Rodon, Ben Cabango, Chris Mepham, Tom Lockyer, Neco Williams, Connor Roberts, Wes Burns, Ethan Ampadu, Josh Sheehan, Jordan James, Joe Morrell, Harry Wilson, Aaron Ramsey, Kieffer Moore, Nathan Broadhead, Brennan Johnson, David Brooks, Tom Bradshaw, Liam Cullen.

Toone's verdict

Ella Toone received a runners up medal at the World Cup

England international Ella Toone believes Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales should do the right thing and resign from his position.

The 46-year-old has come under fire after he kissed Jenni Hermoso in the aftermath of Spain's World Cup win over England earlier in the month.

Rubiales has since refused to resign and now faces a preliminary sexual assault investigation by FIFA.

Toone said: "Something like that doesn't just go away with a sorry, which he hasn't said either.

"For us, we want the right thing to be done. We don't want things like this to be happening in women's sport and unfortunately it's a talking point we shouldn't have to talk about.

"They've won the World Cup, which should be the main talking point, and yet it's been overshadowed by something that happened after the game which isn't acceptable and the Lionesses all stand by Jenni Hermoso."

Farke's fury

Daniel Farke was left scratching his head as Leeds were dumped out of the Carabao Cup

Leeds head coach Daniel Farke was unhappy with the retaken decisive spot-kick as the Whites were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Salford.

Ossama Ashley was allowed to take his penalty again after Karl Darlow had saved his initial effort but was cautioned for coming off his line.

Farke said: "It was the only penalty to be retaken, but I can't change the referee's decision.

"It's disappointing, but we have to accept the loss. We hit the bar and the post, and had numerous chances to put the ball in the net, but we didn't and we must improve on that.

"It's not for me to punish or accuse anyone after going out of this competition — it's just been one of those days."

Part of the pack

Matheus Nunes is hoping to get his move to Manchester City this summer

Gary O'Neil expects Matheus Nunes to remain at Wolves ahead of Friday's transfer deadline with Manchester City yet to make an improved offer for the midfielder.

The Premier League champions saw a £47million bid rejected last week and are weighing up another attempt at signing the 25-year-old.

O'Neil said: "He's not with the group at the moment, his choice, after the bid from Manchester City he decided it was best for him not to be with the group. Club policy and how we deal with things like that is set in place.

"As far as I'm aware there’s been no improved bid. Matheus Nunes is still our player, we have a long contract still with him and at this moment I fully expect him to be here come September 2.

"The next few days will be key of course and conversations will take place that will be private between me and Matheus and I'm sure the situation will be resolved.

"I'm excited because I'm still convinced that on September 2 the squad will be in a better place than it was last week, I'm excited for the next few days."

Spence heads to Leeds

Tottenham full-back Djed Spence has joined Leeds on a season-long loan.

The England Under-21s international was also shipped out last season and spent the 2022-23 campaign with Ligue 1 side Rennes.

He now has the chance to impress in the Championship again after making a name for himself with Nottingham Forest two years ago.

The 23-year-old will link up with Spurs team-mate Joe Rodon, who is also spending the current campaign with the Whites.

On his move, Spence said: "It's good to be here and I can't wait to get started. It's a big club, obviously there's a good squad and there is ambition at the club to get back to the Premier League.

"I just want to get playing again. There's a good manager here, I've heard a lot about him and way he wants to play attacking football. I think that will suit my style of football.

"I've spoken to him [Daniel Farke] and he's orchestrated in the way he wants to play, it sounded good and for me it was the right decision."
