Eddie Howe hailed Newcastle's "special night" at St James' Park after demolishing Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

The Toon ran out convincing winners against the European heavyweights with Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar all on target for the hosts.

It saw the Magpies climb to the top of a star-studded Group F — a far cry from the relegation battle Newcastle were fighting in when Howe took over in November 2021.

Magpies boss Howe, 45, said: "I'm so pleased with the players for what they gave tonight.

"It was a difficult game tactically, PSG try to play from the back, so we had to unbalance and unsettle them.

"We were man for man at the back against elite players and they had some moments when they hurt us in what I thought was an even game but our goals came at good moments.

"To score four times against PSG in front of our supporters made it a really special night. The atmosphere was very special — I can't thank our fans enough.

"In Milan in the last game [when Newcastle drew 0-0] there was an element of us not quite hitting our levels but tonight gives us the belief we need to be successful. But it's only a small step."

Local lads Burn and Longstaff were both on target for the hosts, while Almiron and Schar join the latter in being present for Newcastle's journey from the bottom three to Europe's top table under Howe.

The ex-Bournemouth boss added: "I really respect the Geordies [in our team], the people who have associations with the club and understand what it means to play for Newcastle.

"It's a unique experience, so for Sean to score as he did and play like he did is incredible. Dan had an amazing moment too.

"To go from the difficult moment we were in to now is a great lesson for us not to get ahead of ourselves.

"We've come a long way in a short period of time but we want to keep going."
