Canada and Uruguay meet at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte in the early hours of Sunday morning as they contest for third place in the 2024 Copa America.

Uruguay lost an ill-tempered affair against Colombia 1-0 in their semi-final, while Canada fell to an unsurprising 2-0 defeat to World Cup holders Argentina.

Team news

Canada are free from any injury concerns heading into this tie, with Cyle Larin set to lead the line ahead of Jonathan David.

Publicidad

Centre-back Ronald Araujo will sit this one out through injury, with Guillermo Varela and Nicolas de la Cruz both suspended for Uruguay, while the players involved in the controversial post-match fracas against Colombia are available.

Former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch has made a big impact since taking charge of Canada.

The stats

Under 2.5 goals has landed in each of Canada’s five Copa America games, while just two goals have been scored in Uruguay’s last three games.

The only previous meeting between these sides ended in a 2-0 win for Uruguay in 2022.

These sides have scored just two goals between them in their last six combined matches.

Prediction

Canada did extremely well to reach the Copa America semi-finals where they put in a respectable showing against World Cup holders Argentina and they can continue to showcase their defensive prowess against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay.

Publicidad

Fellow former Leeds man Jesse Marsch's side have conceded just five goals across their five games, picking up results against Peru and Chile in the group stages before beating Venezuela on penalties.

Uruguay were also taken to penalties in their quarter-final tie against Brazil, while an ill-tempered meeting with Colombia, which ended in chaos, saw their attacking stars falter once again.

After thrashing Panama and Bolivia, La Celeste have scored just one goal in their three games against the United States, Brazil, and Colombia, with this trio of games producing a meagre two goals in total.

Third-place ties don’t often garner much interest from fans or players and the expectation on Saturday is for a low-scoring affair in North Carolina.

All five of Canada’s Copa America ties have produced fewer than three goals and, along with their goalless draw against France in their final warm-up friendly, Les Rouges’ last six games have averaged just 1.17 goals per game.

With Uruguay’s last three games producing just two goals, backing the unders is advised this weekend.
