Bournemouth to win & both teams to score

Southampton were one of six teams heading into this Premier League weekend without a win and Russell Martin’s team will be desperate to put that right when they make the short trip along the south coast to take on Bournemouth on Monday.

The Saints will be ruing the fact a late Ipswich goal prevented them from breaking their duck in their last game at St Mary’s and they take on a team who have claimed just one victory themselves, a memorable 3-2 win at Everton.

Team news

Bournemouth’s only injury issue is midfielder Tyler Adams, who remains unavailable due to a back injury.

Southampton’s Jack Stephens is ruled out as he serves the final game of his three-match suspension, while Gavin Bazunu, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Will Smallbone are all injury absentees.

Russell Martin's Southampton are still searching for their first win back in the Premier League.

The stats

Bournemouth have kept two clean sheets in their last 15 league games at the Vitality, while both teams have scored in six of the Cherries’ last nine home league matches.

Southampton have scored in seven of their last 11 away games and Bournemouth have found the net in 14 of their last 17 home league games

Only Manchester City aceErling Haaland has had more efforts on goal than Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo in the first five games of the Premier League season.

Prediction

Many observers anticipated Championship play-off winners Southampton would be in for a tough return to the Premier League and manager Russell Martin will be desperate to see his team gain their first victory as soon as possible just to give everyone at St Mary’s a lift.

Publicidad

There have been some encouraging signs with a Carabao Cup win on penalties against Everton and then being stung by a 96th-minute equaliser against fellow promoted side Ipswich in their last home match.

They should be positive for Monday’s trip to Bournemouth, it is just the sort of fixture they would have earmarked as a strong point-winning opportunity at the start of the campaign.

However, while a proactive approach could be rewarded with a goal, they may not quite have enough to see off the Cherries.

Andoni Iraola will feel his team should have already claimed a home victory after a controversial decision disallowed what would have been a winning goal against Newcastle and the Spaniard will be hoping to recapture the spirit that helped his team overcome a late 2-0 deficit to win their only game at Everton.

They are not afraid to have an effort at goal and look set to go for the jugular against the promoted outfit, so take them to come out on top, even if they do concede on Monday night.
