Belgium will be looking to get back on track immediately after suffering a shock loss to Slovakia on matchday one.

The Red Devils dominated proceedings and had two goals disallowed but could not find a legal breakthrough and now face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages.

They face Romania, who will be on a high after thrashing Ukraine 3-0 in their opener, in Cologne on Saturday and they will be looking for their star men to step up as they seek three crucial points.

Team news

Thomas Meunier remains out for the Belgians, but Axel Witsel, Jan Vertinghen and Arthur Theate are available and two of the three could come in for Zeno Debast and Yannick Carrasco in the back four.

Youri Tielemans’ passing range makes him an option to replace Orel Mangala in midfield as the Red Devils bid to break Romania down.

The Tricolours may name an unchanged starting XI after their impressive 3-0 rout of Ukraine, although Valentin Mihaila, who started on the bench in that game following a minor illness, could replace Florinel Coman on the left wing.

The stats

Edwards Iordanescu' Romania know another win will see them reach the knockout stages of Euro 2024

Belgium’s loss to Slovakia was their first in 15 games under Domenico Tedesco.

Publicidad

Romania have lost just one of their last 16 matches.

Leandro Trossard scored four goals in his last six Premier League games of the season.

The Red Devils have netted 33 times in Tedesco’s 15 matches at the helm.

Trossard has scored three times in his last six Belgium appearances.

Romania’s 3-0 win over Ukraine was their biggest ever victory at a European Championship.

Prediction

It was a frustrating opening game for the entire Belgium team, and their key men will be looking to find their feet in Germany as soon as possible.

There were some positive signs against Slovakia however, including the performance of Leandro Trossard. The forward managed three shots and four key passes in the Red Devils’ defeat and he could build on that against Romania.

Belgium have scored 33 goals in 15 matches under Domenico Tedesco, who suffered his first loss at the helm against Slovakia, so they clearly know how to punish teams.

Romelu Lukaku is the main man up front but his finishing can be erratic, so taking a chance on Trossard, who could be left open as the Romanian defence focus on Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku, to score at a far bigger price could be a better play.

The Arsenal forward netted four goals in his last six games of the season for his club side and has three in his last six for his country.

Publicidad

He is a lively forward with an eye for goal and he could be the man to unlock a resolute Romania.
