Aston Villa have failed to kick on from last season's heroics, suffering their fourth league defeat of the campaign when going down 3-0 at Chelsea on Sunday.
Unai Emery's side have failed to win their last eight in all competition,s but can return to winning ways against Brentford, who have the best home record in the Premier League, but have earned just a single point on the road.
The Bees tend to be involved in exciting games, though, so it could be a cracker at Villa Park.
Team news
Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez came off at half-time at Stamford Bridge and Robin Olsen could start, as may Jhon Duran, who is pushing for more minutes due to former Brentford striker Ollie Watkins' poor run of form – netting just once in his last eight club appearances.
Both Jacob Ramsey (hamstring) and Amadou Onana (ankle) are still sidelined.
Kevin Schade should keep his place in the Bees attack after scoring a hat-trick against Leicester, while Vitaly Janelt is pushing for a starting role after replacing Mathias Jensen, who was forced off in the Foxes win with a hamstring issue.
Defenders Kristoffer Ajer, Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey are injured, as are Gustavo Nunes and Josh Dasilva.
The stats
Villa are unbeaten in their last five league home games, while they have also beaten Bologna and Bayern Munich in the Champions League, as well as drawing with Juventus.
Brentford have won five of their six home games, drawing the other one but have been poor on the road, collecting just one point, playing out a 0-0 at Everton in their away game.
That match at Goodison Park is the only instance in the Bees' last 13 in all competitions that has not seen both teams score.
There have also been goals on both sides in five of the last six meetings between the clubs.
Prediction
Emery remained positive after the defeat to Chelsea, describing Wednesday's match as "an opportunity" and Villa will be desperate to end their recent winless run, which stretches back to October's 2-0 victory over Bologna.
The Villans' schedule has arguably made them the victims of their own success but although 12th, the congested nature of the middle of the Premier League table means a win will move them above Brentford, who sit eighth.
Thomas Frank continues to do a fine job in West London and his team were again excellent in Saturday's 4-1 victory over Leicester.
So good at home, Brentford's away form is peculiar. The Bees can get on the scoresheet, but Villa are unbeaten in five in B6 and, after taking a point from the last three of those, can secureall three on Wednesday.
