Australia will look to maintain a 100% record at the T20 World Cup when they head to St Vincent to face Afghanistan in a Super 8s match on Sunday morning.

Pat Cummins grabbed the headlines in their 28-run win over Bangladesh on Thursday with a hat-trick while David Warner’s half-century ensured they were well ahead of par when the chase was halted by rain.

Afghanistan have had their momentum checked by back-to-back defeats against the West Indies and India, but were only one boundary short of forcing a Super Over in the teams’ only previous T20 meeting two years ago.

Team news

Australia have no major injury concerns and are likely to go in with their full-strength playing XI.

Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood returned to the line-up after being rested against Scotland.

Hazlewood’s place is under the bigger threat if the Aussies decide to play an extra slow bowler on a spin-friendly track.

But all-rounder Marcus Stoinis allayed concerns over his bowling fitness with two overs in Antiuga while captain Mitchell Marsh is edging closer to rolling his arm over again if required.

As for Afghanistan, off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman will miss the rest of the tournament due to a finger injury.

Afghanistan made one change against India, bringing in Hazratullah Zazai for Karim Janat, but the opener was out cheaply on his first outing of the tournament.

The stats

Rahmanullah Gurbaz amassed 167 runs in his four matches in the group stages and will be key to a good start for Afghanistan

Cummins became just the second man to take a T20 World Cup hat-trick for Australia after Brett Lee, also against Bangladesh, in 2007.

Afghanistan's Fazalhaq Farooqi ended the group stage as the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 12.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan scored the most runs in the group stage with 167 in four matches.

The Blue Tigers bowled out their first three opponents in this tournament for under 100 runs, but have now seen West Indies and India score a combined 399 against them in their last two matches.

Prediction

Australia look a cut above Afghanistan at the moment and should record a comfortable win over the Blue Tigers in St Vincent.

They look well covered in the spin department with Adam Zampa taking wickets while pacemen like Cummins and Hazlewood remain as reliable as ever.

But Australia’s batting sets them apart from many of their rivals with openers Warner and Travis Head regularly delivering fast starts.

Head has been a constant source of powerplay runs since being moved up to open the batting and has scored more than 27.5 runs in 10 of his last 12 innings for the Baggy Greens.
