There is excellent racing on both sides of the Irish Sea on Saturday afternoon with Newcastle and the Curragh to the fore. 

It is Northumberland Plate Day at Gosforth Park with Newcastle's big summer event going off at 3.30pm and, right on their heels, the Irish Derby is scheduled for 3.45pm over at the Co Kildare venue.

Newcastle 1.15pm - William Hill Play Responsibly/EBF Novice Stakes (5f)

Both Secret Strength and KINGBOARD STAR are previous winners shouldering penalties in the Gosforth Park opener and Ed Walker's Cotai Glory colt is fancied to make light of it. 

His price rose to 130,000 gns as a two-year-old and he made a smooth start at Bath (5f, good to firm) three weeks ago. 

Favourite Vertiginous attempted to challenge him late on but Eddie Greatrex's mount readily went on again for a clear-cut win. 

The runner-up ran a stormer when fifth in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot since and that gives the form a likeable appearance, with much more to come from this exciting youngster.

Newcastle 2.20pm - William Hill Chipchase Stakes (Group 3, 6f)

Some wily old-stagers go for the Chipchase Stakes as the likes of Oh This Is Us and Brando line-up but it's the younger brigade that should hold sway. 

Three-year-old Diligent Harry is a contender off bottom weight for Clive Cox, while Chil Chil is the only mare in the mix for Andrew Balding and comes here off a stylish Newmarket win last month. 

Roger Varian's KHUZAAM is the one to watch though. Like Diligent Harry, he was an impressive winner on All-Weather Finals Day at Lingfield on Good Friday, settling that mile event in mere strides off the home bend. 

He was no match for Palace Pier at Sandown since but there's no shame in that. 

His best efforts have come on the all-weather and he has the speed and class to cope with dropping back to six furlongs here under Jim Crowley.

Newcastle 3.30pm - William Hill Northumberland Plate Handicap (Heritage Handicap, 2m½f)

Alan King won this two years ago with Who Dares Wins and the Barbury Castle handler has the class act in the field now in Trueshan. 

He is carrying top weight, however, and the pressure on claiming rider Rhys Clutterbuck will be intense as he and Trueshan have a target on their backs. 

Dubious Affair and Alright Sunshine are other leading prospects but perhaps Joseph O'Brien can take this prize to Ireland with GRANDMASTER FLASH. 

He is prolific on the all-weather (out of the money only three times in 11 starts) and was a five-length Dundalk winner in February over two miles. 

He won there over a mile-and-a-half soon after - an effort that ensures he should have the tactical speed for this. 

His Chester Cup run last time is easy enough to overlook and with talented youngster Dylan McMonagle on board, he's got only 8st 11lb on his back now.

Curragh 3.45pm - Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (Group 1, 1m4f)

Should Joseph O'Brien manage to pull off the big win at Newcastle, perhaps the UK trainers at the Curragh can match the raiding feat by exporting the €580,000 on offer to the Irish Derby winner. 

Jack Hobbs in 2015 is the only British-trained winner this century but LONE EAGLE might double that tally. 

Martyn Meade's son of Galileo was only fourth in Sandown's Classic Trial in April but that was behind Alenquer and Adayar — impressive Royal Ascot and Epsom Derby winners subsequently. 

The form is red-hot as such and Lone Eagle advertised his stamina with an impressive four-length Goodwood Listed win last month. 

He gets Frankie Dettori for company here, the Italian seeking to bridge a 27-gear gap from his maiden Irish Derby win to his second, and they are definite players. 

Aidan O'Brien aimed just one at this month's Epsom Classic but the Ballydoyle handler is back to safety in numbers today. 

High Definition, Van Gogh and Wordsworth spearhead his five-strong assault. 

The maiden Mojo Star was second in the Epsom Derby at a huge price and joins Dante winner Hurricane Lane (third) in bringing that form to the Curragh. 

MacSwiney (fourth) was behind them and the Irish 2000 Guineas winner has stamina to prove today.

Curragh 4.20pm - ARM Holding International Stakes (Group 3, 1m2f)

Willie Mullins targets this Group 3 with True Self and the mare is a definite player but Jessica Harrington has a strong hand with Njord and CADILLAC. 

The former is a previous C&D winner and was behind only Kinross at Haydock in this grade last month but it is noted that stable jockey Shane Foley instead sides with Cadillac — not seen since the Breeders Cup in November where he was fourth in a rough race. 

His two defeats last season came on soft going here and at Newmarket in the Dewhurst — both over 7f. 

His pair of Leopardstown wins (7f/1m) came on good ground and marked him out as a very smart colt. 

He was breathtaking on his first start last summer, so his absence isn't a big worry coming into this, and he could really go on to bigger things upped in distance now with conditions favourable.
