Matteo Berrettini could prove to be a tough test for Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon
Matteo Berrettini could prove to be a tough test for Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon

By the close of play on Monday, the quarter-final line-up in both the men’s and women’s draw will be finalised and there is plenty of talent on show hoping to lay down their title marker.

Men's world number one Carlos Alcaraz is attempting to make his first Wimbledon quarter-final but the Spaniard will need to be on the ball against 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini.

Defending women’s champion Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka are expected to come through their last-16 tests with Beatriz Haddad Maia and Ekaterina Alexandrova respectively, but the fourth-round tussle between Petra Kvitova and Ons Jabeur may be tougher to solve.

Bet 1: Carlos Alcaraz to beat Matteo Berrettini @ 2/5

There were serious doubts surrounding the well-being of 2021 Wimbledon runner-up Berrettini heading into this year’s Championships, but convincing victories over Lorenzo Sonego, Alex De Minaur and Alexander Zverev have gone a long way to quash those concerns.

However, it would be a push to say Berrettini is operating at his absolute maximum and world number one Alcaraz should expose any frailties.

Grass is believed to be Alcaraz’s weakest surface but he did win at Queen’s Club in the build up to Wimbledon and has dropped only one set in making the fourth round.

So it may be that the Spanish 20-year-old is such a good prospect that he is able to transfer his best game to any surface and, with Berrettini likely to soon feel the effects of reaching the fourth round, the favourite can prevail.

Bet 2: Jiri Lehecka + 5.5 games on handicap vs Daniil Medvedev @ 3/4

It could be time up for Daniil Medvedev at SW19 this year
It could be time up for Daniil Medvedev at SW19 this year

Third seed Daniil Medvedev is eyeing a first ever Wimbledon quarter-final appearance, but the Russian may have to dig deep to see off the challenge of impressive Czech youngster Jiri Lehecka.

The fact Medvedev, a four-time Grand Slam finalist, has never made the last eight of Wimbledon shows his vulnerability on grass and Lehecka has the game to test him.

Lehecka made the Australian Open quarter-final earlier in the season, which highlights his promise, and he has been serving superbly throughout this tournament which is sure to put some pressure on Medvedev.

The 21-year-old has dropped serve only once in overcoming Sebastian Ofner, Francisco Cerundolo and Tommy Paul and can make the Russian work hard for his rewards.

Bet 3: Petra Kvitova to beat Ons Jabeur @ 8/11

A battle between last season’s Wimbledon runner-up Jabeur and two-time winner Petra Kvitova promises to be a cracker and it could be the former All England Club champion that is celebrating.

Kvitova’s title success in Miami in April saw her return into the top ten and she has not looked back since, adding a grass-court title in Berlin to her illustrious CV last month.

That means the seasoned Czech performer has won her last eight matches on the grass and dropped only one set in the process.

Kvitova has also won four of her five previous meetings with the sweet-moving Jabeur, who needed to come from a set down to win her third-round clash with Bianca Andreescu.

Monday, 11am

Bet 4: Elena Rybakina to beat Beatriz Haddad Maia @ 4/11

Defending champion Rybakina is growing in stature as the tournament progresses and the big-serving Kazakh should have too many weapons for Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Rybakina took only 58 minutes to see off Britain’s Katie Boulter 6-1 6-1 in the previous round, meaning the world number three has lost only one of her last 12 grass-court matches.

Haddad Maia is having a season to remember – she made the French Open semi-final last month – but deciding set wins over Jaqueline Cristian and Yulia Putintseva at the All England Club suggest she may struggle against a player of Rybakina’s calibre.
