Tottenham striker Timo Werner was happy to assist on his debut against Manchester United but insists he can improve as the season goes on.

Spurs twice fought back from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford and the German forward teed up Rodrigo Bentancur less than a minute into the second half for the visitors' second.

Werner said: "First of all, I'm very happy to be back. It's a lot of fun to play here.

"You see today it's the best league with the tempo and the game. I enjoyed it very much.

"One point but in the next few days I can train more with the guys and it can go better. To play for a new club in this stadium against United, you're always a bit nervous. You try to enjoy it.

"What I see and what the coaches and players did for me in the last few days was incredible. I was included straight away. I want to play in our stadium.

"You always want to score as the offensive player but if you can assist, that is also good."

Ange Postecoglou had no choice but to throw Werner in at the deep end with Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Heung-Min Son all missing.

The North London outfit dominated the match and the Australian head coach was left with a feeling of pride at the end of the contest, despite only picking up one point.

He said: "We've had a rough week with some illness in the camp. Credit to the players they kept going to the end. It was an outstanding effort.

"Timo had two training sessions and played 60 minutes for the club. He was outstanding.

"He [Kulusevski] hadn't trained all week, [Oliver] Skippy was under the weather and so was Destiny [Udogie].

"All year we've just got on with it. It was a big game, particularly away from home."
