Nathan Tella played a key role in Burnley's promotion to the Premier League.

The 23-year-old forward joined the Clarets from Southampton on a season-long loan last summer and proceeded to take the Championship by storm.

His future is now a topic of hot debate after the Saints suffered relegation to England's second tier.

We shine the spotlight on the versatile winger, who was named in the EFL Championship Team of the Season for 2022-23.

Nathan the finisher

Despite rarely playing as an out-and-out centre forward, Tella comfortably finished as Burnley's top scorer last term.

As well as tormenting defenders with his fancy footwork and direct playing style, the Stevenage-born ace bagged 17 Championship goals.

Manuel Benson's total of 11 was the second-highest tally in Vincent Kompany's squad.

Tella also averaged 0.61 goals per game — the fourth-best record among all players in the division.

His prolificacy at Turf Moor is quite surprising given that he scored just twice in 41 senior appearances for Southampton.

Permanent Claret

Tella's heroics in front of goal and impressive all-round play last season mean Burnley are eager to snap him up on a permanent deal this summer.

Judging by comments from the ex-Arsenal youth star in March, he would like to extend his stint in Lancashire and continue operating in Kompany's free-flowing setup.

Tella said: "Honestly, it's just a joke to play with these boys.

"They've taken me in really well and I feel like I’ve learned so much from the manager, the way we play and the boys as well.

"It's been really great. It's a joy for all of us to be involved in."

Price tag

Reports claim that while Burnley are interested in Tella, they are currently unwilling to meet Southampton's £15million valuation.

However, the Englishman has just two years remaining on his deal at St Mary's.

That may prompt the South Coast club to lower their demands and cash in on the talented marksman this summer.

On his future, Tella said: "I haven't really thought about it, I know I'm contracted to Southampton so I'm looking forward to going back there and doing pre-season.

"I'm looking forward to seeing my family and friends and going on holiday with them, that's it. It's a very good question but one I don't have the answer to right now."

If new Saints boss Russell Martin is able keep him beyond this transfer window, Burnley have already identified Millwall star Zian Flemming as an alternative.

Decision time

Remaining at Southampton would, of course, have its positives.

It would allow Tella to further hone his skills in a division where he has already made a significant impact.

Helping to guide the Saints back into the Premier League at the first time of asking would be quite the statement by the youngster.

But returning to Burnley and playing in the top flight with a team who already know how to get the best out of him may prove too tempting — and could result in him trying to force through the move.
