Katie Boulter won her first WTA 500 title by fighting back from a set down to beat Marta Kostyuk in the San Diego Open final.

The British No1 triumphed 5-7 6-2 6-2 to claim her biggest victory to date and reach a career-high world ranking of 27.

Closely edged out in the first set against the Ukrainian, the 27-year-old put in a dominant display to clinch the trophy and continue her exceptional start to 2024.

Boulter said: "I don't know what just happened. This one is pretty amazing, I've worked very hard for it.

"This week has been very, very special for so many different reasons. I played some incredible tennis all week.

"Today was a complete battle, with myself as well, because I was a little bit nervous.

"A lot of it was about me staying as tough as I possibly could mentally and I managed to keep my cool and actually kind of went within myself and calmed myself down a lot.

"I think that really helped me and then I started to relax and play through shots a little bit more."

Since winning her only other tour title at least year's Nottingham Open, Boulter has shot up 99 places in the rankings — breaching the top 30 for the first time with her success in California.

She added: "Nothing stops here. It's an uphill battle and I just want to keep going and see how far I can get.

"Ultimately, I just want to do the best I can and I've always asked that of myself."

It is not her only cause for celebration over the weekend, with boyfriend Alex de Minaur also retaining his title at the Mexican Open on Saturday.

After the Australian world No10 flew in to catch her final, Boulter said: "I want to say a small special thank you to my boyfriend.

"He finished last night at midnight and I really want to embarrass him.

"He got on a 4.15am taxi this morning and six o'clock flight to be here today, so I do appreciate it."
