Sheffield Wednesday to win

Sheffield Wednesday’s progress to the brink of survival has been one of the stories of the Championship season and they will be looking to finish the job when taking on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The Owls won just one of their first 18 games to leave themselves 12 points adrift of safety.

But they have turned things around and approach their final match needing only one more point to stay out of the bottom three.

Sunderland have no such concerns but they will be keen to give their fans a positive send off having lost each of their last two games.

Team news

Sunderland continue to be stretched by injuries with Niall Huggins, Jenson Seelt (both knee), Dennis Cirkin (hamstring), Dan Neil (leg) and Nazariy Rusyn (calf) ruled out.

Sixteen-year-old attacker Chris Rigg started last Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Watford and will be hoping for more match minutes.

No fresh injuries are reported for Sheffield Wednesday so Danny Rohl may be tempted to name an unchanged line up.

However, he is without Leeds loanee winger Ian Poveda (hamstring) and Chilean attacker Juan Delgado (hip).

The stats

Sunderland have lost nine of their last 14 matches.

The Black Cats have failed to score in four of their last five fixtures.

Eight of Sunderland’s last 11 fixtures have generated fewer than two goals.

Sheffield Wednesday are unbeaten in their last five matches.

The Owls are the second lowest scorers in the division but they have scored at least two goals in four of their last five fixtures.

Prediction

Sheffield Wednesday have hauled themselves out of a desperate situation and can preserve second-tier status in style by defeating Sunderland on Wearside.

One more point is required to keep Wednesday in the Championship but the maths are unlikely to influence Owls’ boss Danny Rohl, who loves to play front-foot football.

Rohl inherited a seemingly doomed situation when he arrived at the club last October and has done an amazing job to turn things around.

The German has overseen a steady improvement and won the hearts of the Wednesday fanbase, who frequently chant his name.

Wednesday finally climbed out of the bottom three with a 3-1 victory at Blackburn in their 44th game and they can finish the job against their out-of-sorts hosts.

Sunderland were play-off participants last season, but they have taken just nine points from the last 14 games and are set to suffer their 22nd league defeat of an underwhelming campaign.
